I’ve never traveled by air with a rifle or shotgun before, but thinking about the potential for joining my daughter in Texas for a hunt. If so, I’d probably just drive (15-ish hours), but…
Has anyone consistently had particularly good or particularly bad experiences with a specific airline re checking firearms?
Any specific tips or things to do / not do?
Not much trouble to travel with firearms. If you’re traveling within the us, just get a hard case like a pelican. Put at least two non-TSA locks on it. Ammo can go in the case with the gun.
When you check in, just say you want to declare a firearm. They’ll have you open the case and put an orange tag in there. You lock it up and walk with them to tsa to check it. That’s it!
If traveling with a suppressor or SBR or anything with special regulations, be certain it’s legal at your destination and any places you may be stopping.
I just wanted to add that Delta, at least in Atlanta, requires a lock everywhere there is a place to put one. My SKB has four places so four TSA approved padlocks. Several trips to Colorado and Texas, never an issue. Also make sure that your ammo is in a “factory” box.
