This is going to be for a back country hunting and long range shooting rifle. I am trying to decide between the Fierce Carbon Rival XP OR the Fierce Carbon Rival FP. Which do you guys prefer an internal magazine OR an external clip? And Why? I like the idea of the internal magazine for it being 2 ounces lighter, but the external sounds fun too. I do not know what to do. But I do care about weight. What do ya’ll think?
Thank you so much
I have both and the internal is alright in my 7mm Rem Mag, but I prefer the external magazines because I can easily pack more than one loaded magazine and reload quickly if needed.
I personally prefer the hinged floor plate so the mag doesn’t rattle and come loose but I’m fine with either.
Lots of variables. Depends upon the specifics.
Sako makes the best magazine out there in my opinion. It’s metal, but unlike many other metal magazines there’s no way in the world it’s going to Rattle because it’s really held in place firmly. The magazine release button is recessed and in order to operate it you also have to push up against the magazine body. There’s no way that things coming loose because it gets snagged on a branch or something. And to make it even better, you can completely ignore it as a detachable magazine as you can top load it. Most other magazines including Tikka require you to remove the magazine and load the round front to back. Not with Sako.
I absolutely abhor an internal magazine that’s blind without a hinged floor plate. I had a Kimber like that and more than once things got jammed up and the only way to get things free was to completely disassemble the rifle. Don’t want to do that in the middle of the woods.
I’ve never had it happen to me, but many other people have reported that magazines that have an external latch sometimes we’ll get snagged on things in the woods thus dropping your magazine and rendering your rifle pretty useless. And again, that’s dependent upon the specific design of the magazine release.
Thanks guys. Hey @backfire, you know Fierce rifles pretty good right. If you were buying one from them. Would you buy the Fierce Rival Carbon FP or the Fierce Rival Twisted FP. Barrel will be 20" regardless. Use for back country hunting and long rang shooting as well. Which one would you do? It will be in 22 Creedmoor
Personal preference but steel barrel all day long.
Around here this time of year if you go around and shoot a string of fire out of a carbon fiber barrel, you’re going to have to wait anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes for the thing to cool down again.
I agree w Carter, but I’m a sucker for the look of the carbon barrels. They definitely retain heat longer tho.
I’ve had the odd bad experience with both but generally prefer detachable magazines. It depends on the type of hunt but many situations require you to get in/out of the hunting vehicle multiple times a day. It’s just easier to remove a magazine and pop it in my pocket instead of dropping the floor plate and then having the individual cartridges rattling around in my pocket. Easier and quicker to reload the gun too. Also if I’m using lead tipped bullets (not so much of an issue since I moved on from Partitions) I’m more likely to deform them loading/unloading a floor plate rifle.
