Another question for those familiar with Lapua brass. I found a good price on small primer brass and I’m trying to look at load data but I can’t find anything for case capacity. Other brands I’ve been able to find recommended charges but I can’t find anything for Lapua. I checked their website and catalog but they didn’t have any load data published with powder charges. I’m sure I’m missing something but since I’m just starting I figured I’d ask people that actually know what they’re doing.
Generally you won’t find the case capacity and load charges from the brass manufacturer. You’ll just get that from your load book under the cartridge you’re shooting. The loads there will work in brass from any company.
Is that what you’re asking?
Yes and no I think. The bullets I plan on using have data for other brass manufacturers but not for Lapua. I wasn’t sure if I should assume a similar charge level as another brand or if there was data out there that is related to Lapua. For example, Barnes has data for Hornady brass with large primers on their published load data at 38.2-42.5g of H4350, and Nosler has their brass with small primers at 41.0-45.0g. Both recommended charges are quite different so I wasn’t sure if I should start somewhere in the middle or how high to go. I’m also using the data for the TTSX and the E-Tip to compare so I’m sure the bullets used have a lot to do with it. I hope that explains things a little better.
Generally, the brass mentioned is just for reference. It should work fine switching brass brands.
But I see what you’re saying with the primers. Small vs large primer will definitely change things.
I’ve looked around to see what other people have loaded with Lapua and it looks like most people are at the 41-43 grain area. I think I’ll start on the lower end to be safe at 41 and slowly move up looking for signs of overpressure or until I find a load my Cross likes.
