Anyone done diy Alaska caribou hunts with tips for how I could pull this off last minute?
If you’re heading up the haul road you might try Deadhorse.
I’ve been pondering a trip to Adak myself.
Yeah, can’t figure out how to get up the haul road. Uhaul doesn’t allow rentals on the haul road anymore.
Eww. I forgot about that. I think it was Alaska Airboat Adventures who posted earlier in the week that a flight into Deadhorse is less than the U-Haul option when one was actually available.
Where did you see that post? Would like to read about that.
Can’t figure out how to get from deadhorse to the boat launch.
I’m still trying to find it. I know it was on Facebook, which is annoying with trying to get away from Meta. I’ll keep snooping and see if I can find it.
Finally found it! They mention flying into Fairbanks and getting a rental then driving the 450 miles to mm 366.5, fly into Deadhorse and rent a vehicle to drive the 52 miles to their location or arrange for them to pick you up at the hotel in Deadhorse.
What they don’t mention is how to get a flight to Deadhorse but I suspect if you call them they have some options.

If you can make a two week + trip. Get a few friends to tough it out and drive. 2.25 days one way 4.5 total splitting the driving in shifts with 3 people calculating for 8000ish miles (Hurricane to Deadhorse and back with hunting mileage) there and back on the dedicated hunting truck is roughly 800 to 850 in gas a person. Buy a cheaper hunting truck or use a friends and go. Call the border for animal transportation and or guns before going.
There’s also the Alaska Marine Highway (ferry boat) between Seattle and Anchorage. That sounds like a peaceful journey also.
im not sure it will help , but in the Yukon just beside Alaska , we either fly with a float plane or a beaver with the huge tires. they drop you off where you need to be and that’s it. you inReach them your location when it’s time to be picked up.
Is a guide required? Might be a viable option in the next year or two.
are you asking for Yukon? if you are American, yes you need to go through an outfitter. If you are Canadian resident, it’s either through an outfitter or someone you know can apply for a special guide license ( bison, moose). that permit allow you to also shoot bears, coyotes and or wolves.
Are you wanting a specific hunt unit? It might be difficult at this late date to find a drop camp flight operator.
