Leupold VX-6HD 3-18x44mm FireDot vs Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44mm FireDot

Other than giving up 18X vs 15X will I really see any difference in the VX-5HD vs the VX-6HD? I am not shooting 1000 yards, well under 300 yards at most and the built in level is not a big deal. I saw a big difference from my Leupold VX-3HD to the VX-5HD. Part of the may be the 42mm to 44mm objective but seems to be a better optic. Should I expect that same Wow moment going to the VX-6HD? I have looked in the store but not the same as in the field as I really don’t see a difference looking across the store.

Thanks
Ron

I’ve owned a number of both vx5 and vx6. Honestly can’t say I can tell the difference in terms of optical quality between the two. Obviously the biggest difference is going to be the specifics of the objective size, Zoom range for each individual scope.

The only two I’ve had troubles with, were both vx6 is not holding their zeros.

On another recent discussion regarding this here on the forum, another member brought up the point that when you’re starting to get to vx6 money, you’re also now in the swarovski, zeiss, other premium optic price range also. So why not go with the more premium scope.

Well they just released the VX-6 gen 2 and the biggest update appears to be the turret design (tool-less) a much needed and overdue change. I wonder when that will come into the vx-5 because that 3-15 is about perfect price and feature-wise, except for the turret that requires allen key to adjust.

The only difference in the two is magnification range - Leupold claims same guts and glass/coatings. I have both and think the VX5 is the sweetspot for value in a 30MM optic. I had posted before, a gentleman by the name of Patrick at Predator Optics has saved me several hundred dollars on VX5 and VX6 scopes.

The gen 2 also have anti cant built into the reticle and if you’re not level it will flash at you. No need for a bubble level anymore.

The Gen 2 looks awesome to me and I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to buy one… except… It’s illegal to hunt with where I live, Utah. The blinking of the reticle if it’s not level makes it “electronic” and therefore illegal to hunt with.

I have a VX-5 3-15x44 on my deer rifle and I love it. But I only use Leupold’s on my hunting guns. I like a busier reticle on my bench guns. But you can’t beet the CDS for hunting.
