Light weight mountain/ backcountry rifle, calibre, scope…setup decision making

@cchilds
Yeah it’s threaded 1/2x28

@alexfields
Great :muscle:t3::blush: :+1:t2:
I like that walnut stock option :nerd_face:
Looks like you get some rounds through it before I do :sweat_smile:

I got it all setup and boresighted.

Specs:
Howa superlite davidsons 7mm-08
Ceracote burnt bronze
Limbsaver pad
Radial Brake
Talley rings low 1“
Leupold 3HD 4.5-14x40
Spartan javelin bipod

6lbs 1oz unloaded

Adding some notes about the one I recently picked up in .243; got it all sighted in and tested several loads…

  • Howa Superlite .243 Winchester, Walnut stock (5.5 lbs.)
  • Matte black barreled action, threaded 1/2x28
  • 3 round flush polymer magazine
  • Leupold PRW rings, low (4.3 oz)
  • Leupold VX-3HD 3.5-10x40 (13.5 oz)
    Total weight: 6.6 lbs. unloaded

One of the other cool things about the walnut stock option (and why I snapped it up) is that it only costs USD $600, where the carbon stock is a bit lighter, but I think it retails around USD $900-1,000.

Shot 3 groups of 3 each @100 yards:

  • Winchester PowerPoint 100 gr: 1.07" average group, best group 0.72"
  • Hornady American Whitetail 100 gr: 2.02" average, best 1.13"
  • Remington Core Lokt Tipped 95 gr: 1.75" average, best 1.25"
  • Federal Premium Berger Hybrid 95 gr: 0.94" average, best 0.25"
  • Federal PowerShok 80 gr: 1.25" average, 0.75"
  • Hornady V-MAX 87 gr: 2.45" average, best 1.60"
  • Hornady Precision Hunter 90 gr: This ammo did not “fit” into the chamber–could not rotate bolt down into closed position? Weird.

So, wow–that Federal Premium Berger Hybrid! Excellent. Got some other really respectable groups with a few other (cheaper) options too. Not sure what is up w/ Precision Hunter here…
