I have slowly migrated from hunting rifles into trying my hand at long range shooters with a Ruger Precision in 338 Lapua. The RPR comes with a 20 MOA rail and I put an Arcken EP-5 7-35x56 on top. The intent was to zero at 100 yds then dial the elevation to the distance. Yesterday was the first trip to the range and to my surprise with the elevation dialed all the way down the best I could get was 5” high at 100 yds. As the set up and testing are in the initial stages what would be the recommended path to proceed, zero at some elevated setting or find a solution to attain a 100 yd zero without impeding the long range performance?
I have the exact same rifle, and love it. I put a NightForce 5-25 on top and it’s zeroed perfectly at 100 yards. Not sure why yours isn’t doing that. You didn’t use rings with even more cant?
That is interesting but a definite possibility. I picked up the RPR without optics back in Oct, the scope and rings three weeks ago. I used a cantilever setup but have since read that individual rings are the way to go. What would your opinion be on that?
Do you load your own or use factory ammo?
So far only Factory ammo. I don’t shoot it really enough to justify reloading.
I actually have my scope in a cantilever mount also. And it works perfectly fine. I just chose that because I put that scope on a different rifle many many years ago when they were all the rage. Just didn’t feel like taking it off and putting it on new rings
My father In law has the same setup but 300prc and the arken EP5. We both hit out to 2400 yards over Christmas. Awesome rifle. Not sure why your rifle is 5in high at 100 yards tho
I’ll be checking the entire set up next week as you are now the third person who has said much the same thing. I began loading at the lower end of the chart with 80 & 84.5 gr of H1000 but I doubt if barrel harmonics would cause such a large deviation at those lower pressures.
Not to sound too dumb… as I’m not familiar with the Arken scopes, but I had a experience once where I mounted the scope and the adjustment bottomed out on me with the same problem, then my friend said”you need to reset the zero stop” so now when sighting in guns, I take the zero stop off until I get it dialed in so that I have the full range of adjustment.
That idea has merit. This is the first scope I’ve had with a zero stop and could easily be the issue.
I’d say that the zero lock would be the problem, maybe read the manual, it’ll either help you or make you more confused. The only time I couldn’t zero at 100 was with a digital scope on a 20 moa rail. Man that was frustrating. Hope you find your problem
The zero stop was at the core of that issue and I’m now zeroed at 100 yds. The Ruger Precision 338 Lapua absolutely loves the 270gr Hornady ELD-X at max recommended load of 92.6 gr of H1000 with no signs of over pressure on the case face. Getting prepped to stretch it out to 500 yds then 1000 in the next month.
Nice, glad you got it dialed in
