So I am aware that the 25-06 is not the popular kid, it’s never reached it’s potential due to the rifling and limitation of lighter bullets but it’s what I am looking for. I have all of my Dad’s reloading dies, powder, brass, bullets, etc for the 25-06 and for nostalgia reasons wanting it for varmit hunting. I have a 6.5 Creedmoor so I’ll answer the question that will come up.
The reason for this post is trying to find what I am looking for. I am looking for something in the $1200 range. I have looked at the Weatherby Vanguards but they are a 26" barrel which longer than I want. I’m not going to be shooting over 200 yards. I am not really seeing any rifles that intrigue me which leads me to looking at a used 1970’s Remington 700 BDL.
Anyone else gone down this rabbit hole? If so, please share your path.
Thanks
Ron
I did try the Weatherby at one point myself. I just found it to be quite ammo picky, I never did reload for it. And when I finally found a load it liked, it would only shoot about a two shot group before really starting to open up. Be fine for hunting most likely.
Then I just happened upon a 700 Sendero. That’s a really nice one. It’s probably longer and heavier than you’re looking for but really does group them well.
I’ve shot a friend’s Sako 85 in it. That was a very nice one too and was nice and light and relatively short.
That would be awesome. I have looked at a custom 1:9 twist barrel to overcome the lighter bullet limitation. But a 25 Creedmoor would be potentially be a screamer.
I was thinking we were going to be seeing the exact same thing. However, if you listen to the most recent Backcountry hunting podcast, they had Seth from Hornady on and he says there’s nothing in the works for a new Creedmoor or PRC right now.
I have a 25 creedmoor. Alpha and Peterson make headstamped brass i push 100 grain barnes @ 3100 to 3200 .
But a 25-06 ? Does ( or did) ruger make one in the American? I know they used to chamber the markII m77 in 25-06 and you can get it in some savage rifles still i think.
I have an old 25-06 I inherited from my grandfather. It’s a blast to shoot and accurate. Has a fixed 6x scope on it. I might have to start reloading for it.
Yes I’ve had one for about 1 year and a half.
Its still considered a wildcat because its not sammi speced but petersons and alpha both make brass for it. Its vert easy to resize 6.5 creed brass just one pass through the sizing die i have a redding sizing and seating die.
I have come full circle since posting this. The more I researched the more I found that I wasn’t going to get what I wanted off the shelf. So I have decided to use a Remington 700 action and have a barrel made. Hart can do one in a 1:9 twist but I really want 1:8 twist. Shaw only does 1:10. I have looked but I don’t find any barrel makers doing a .257 in a 1:8 twist but they are mentioned on the forums. Anybody else gone down this rabbit hole?
