Mailing Firearms

I want to mail a rifle from Utah to Michigan. I know an FFL is needed on both ends. Has anyone used an online shipper like ShipMyGUN.com

I’ve used shipmygun for gunbroker sales; it works, no FFL needed on your end that way.

Has anyone shipped firearms, ammo, reloading componentsto Alaska from the lower 48?

I mail them all the time through the usps, as long as it’s a long gun or shotgun, and being mailed to a ffl it’s legal. Just make sure it has a over box(which most gun shops or sporting goods stores have they’ll give you) you can also mail a gun to yourself so if you were going to be hunting in another state etc.. you can mail it to yourself. Another trick is mailing parts… as if you take the bolt out, it’s no longer a firearm but a part, then mail the bolt separately. When I do sell one on gunbroker, and I mail it to a ffl, I have all the sale paperwork included along with a copy of my drivers license so that they can to the transfer to the new owner

  • Removing the bolt does not make it “not a firearm”, the serialized part is the receiver or lower if its an AR and so on.

  • Mailing firearms to yourself over state lines is illegal, it must go to an FFL

IANAL but those stuck out to me.

Mailing a firearms out of state to another person is illegal without a Ff. Mailing a firearm to “Yourself” to another state is Legal for the purpose of a lawful activity. It best not to bring up what your shipping to the carrier as they become self imposed gun control agents.

This made me laugh because I had a UPS Store deny shipping a few month go over a trigger.

“What are you shipping?”

“Rifle Trigger”

“We do not allow the shipping of firearms or firearm parts.”

“I checked and UPS does allow the shipping of firearms and components?”

“I understand, but the UPS store itself does not allow it”

“…”

I should have just said it was mechanical parts or something.

UPS stores and FedEx stored are privately owned and can impose there on policies, when it comes to FedEx and UPS, you have to go directly to there office/shipping hub etc..

When I sell a gun on gunbroker I only offer USPS shipping,

Thank you for the information. I used Shipmygun.com. They emailed me a UPS label and I shipped my package yesterday.

Sporting goods.

I used UPS to mail my Benelli shotgun back to them for repair. After 2 failed attempts, even in Texas, Benelli told me to tell them it was machined parts.

according to these lawyers, you can mail a rifle to yourself at an address in another state.

**U.S. Postal Service Rifle and Shotgun Shipping Rules

432.3 Rifles and Shotguns**

b. A rifle or shotgun owned by a non-FFL may be mailed outside the owner’s state of residence by the owner to himself or herself, in care of another person in the other state where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity.

No Utah sporting goods in my area will ship a personal firearm.

Update, rifle arrived in fine shape. The sporting goods store has a 24 hour hold so my Uncle can pick it up tomorrow. Total cost $40

How much do you normally pay to ship a rifle?

So I use pirate ship, you just have to put in the dimensions and the weight. Then it gives you the options of usps or ups, like if you want ground, priority, air etc… lets you add insurance. I keep it vague on what’s in there, then you print your label slap it on and just drop it off at a location near you. You’re able to avoid the personal contact at the store and the self imposed gun control workers who think they know the laws and want to restrict you. The last gun I shipped was usps ground, on Pirate Ship came to a total of $35.98 and that was with $1000 of insurance.
