Muzzle Brake for .300 Win Mag

Hey Jim, just watched the new sako 90 video. What muzzle brake did you put on it for the 3rd day that you guys went shoot? Also do you have any muzzle brake recommendations? I’m looking to put one on my rifle. If anyone else has any good recommendations feel free to answer! @backfire

Proof Research recommended this company to me when I purchased one of Proof’s 300WM.

It’s the “little” one.

Can’t post a direct link because there’s a bad word in the product name, and the forum software blocks it.

Works well but it don’t have anything really to compare it to.

Okay I’ll check it out, thanks!

I think that one was made by Fierce. I kind of feel like muzzle brakes are mostly a commodity. A 4-port brake will usually give a 45% recoil reduction.

Okay I wasn’t sure if there were any preferred options out there as I haven’t done much research on them. Thanks for the info!

I have a friend that uses the Fat Bastar*, yes that is the brand name, on his 300 win mag…It has 5 ports and an option for a tuner…he mentioned this, https://www.strikewithoutwarning.com/product/tmb/ , as being a good choice for magnum loads…I shoot 6.5cm with an EC V2 tuner brake…

I am a beliver in this one:

I have the Little B on a Proof 300WM. It’s what Proof recommended when i asked.

Works well.

It also has tunable compensator ports on top of the brake to deal with muzzle rise…

I used a TI Pro 5 from Salmon River Solutions this year on my 300 WM, and it worked great for recoil reduction. Felt somewhere in the neighborhood of my 270. Didn’t bruise my shoulder at all going through about 20 shots at the range.

This was my first year ever using a muzzle brake hunting and to be honest, I’ll never use one again. While the recoil reduction was great and I had a pair of earplugs for myself to pop in really quick if I was taking a shot so I didn’t damage my hearing, I HATED that I was constantly worrying about noise all the time, specifically:

  1. I was concerned I would forget to put in hearing protection in the rush of the moment if I came across an animal at short range and had to react quickly.

  2. I was often hunting/hiking with a friend and didn’t like the idea that if I made a shot too close to him and he wasn’t prepared, I was putting his hearing at risk.

I’ll be joining the suppressor club before next hunt. I was so focused on the recoil reduction aspect when I got my 300 WM that I overlooked the practicality of using it for hunting and real risk it posed to my hearing and those around me.

Same for me. I was using my Axils and I was constantly adjusting them and had to charge them each night.

The Recoil Hawg from Browning really tamed my x bolt pro in 300 win mag (just under 7.5 lbs fully loaded) and my son’s savage 110 ultralite (8 lbs or so fully loaded). Don’t have specific numbers, but made it feel like my 6.5 creedmoor with naked barrel. Just SO MUCH louder.

Hi Mark. I see that you mentioned you have a Savage 110 Trail Hunter Lite chambered in 300 Win Mag. How is that working out for you with the 20" barrel? Serious recoil without the muzzle brake? How is the accuracy 100-200 yards or so? Thanks - Rudy
I think that I replied to the whole group…not your post.

Savage 110 ULtralite in 300 wsm. 24” proof research barrel. We put a recoil hawg on it. Accuracy didn’t seem to change but it was a lot easier for the kids to shoot (with hearing protection of course!).

From the bench it’s just under an inch at 100, right at or just over 2” at 200. Seems about the same with the brake or the Banish Backcountry. Without a muzzle device, it’s not the worst thing to shoot, but it is certainly less fun. That is with the hornady outfitter 180 gr CX.
