I have a Fierce Carbon Rouge in 280AI. I’ve had it for a couple years and have taken several deer and Antelope with it. It shoots well…typically .6 inch groups for 5 shots. The problem is I can’t even remotely stay on target. I’ve dropped every animal I’ve shot from 100 to 500 yards and I never see them fall. The muzzle jump is pretty bad. I’ve never had this light of a gun, so this was a surprise to me. The recoil isn’t bad…its just jumpy. The bipod comes off the table/ground with every shot. I do shoot a suppressor. Friday I played with several suppressors and the heavier ones did produce less jump, but I still could not stay on target, much less see the impact.
I assume my only real option is to change the stock out? It has a limb saver recoil pad, but I don’t see the backstop recoil pad changing it enough. Thoughts?
I found that a bipod that is wide, like 10"-12" + wide, give me much less bounce that a tall bipod. I have the Tricer RP and when I splayed the legs I was on target shooting my 7PRC.
I do think the Backstop will help. The Backlight too, I saw less jump with that than with my Ultradyne chassis. If you have a Banish suppressor, look into their Suppressor Break (BANISH Suppressor Brakes – Silencer Central). I just got mine yesterday, so I haven’t had the chance to try it out, but if it perform half as well as the Tenet, then the $140 was well worth it.
Thanks for the bipod comment. I may look into that.
Will that brake work on the banish back country? Not sure it will from the website, but I’m on my phone and could have missed something. The fierce has a banish back country on it, but I tried it Friday with my scythe ti, which has a brake. The scythe ti may have been slightly better, but not stay on target better. My nomad 30 was actually the best, but it is a lot heavier than the backcountry and scythe ti.
The Scythe has an omnidirectional brake which while reducing recoil won’t reduce muzzle rise much. TBAC uses a unidirectional brake that you have to time which should reduce muscle rise given the directions of the port. There may be other manufacturers which do similar
I don’t think you’ll get a 280ai to allow you to spot your impact at 20x zoom. Most long range shooters are at 12-14x maximum if you want to spot your impact.
280ai is a mild cartridge but also makes enough recoil that if your recoil pad is lower than the bore of the barrel, it’ll be very tough to spot impacts. And I’d agree that a Backstop does help but in and of itself probably won’t be enough unless you totally change up the rest of the system too.
I don’t think I could spot impact at 10-12 zoom. Seems like it jumps 50 yards over. I now see why you are a proponent of building a rifle. I’ll likely change the stock out as it shoots well, but now we are getting close to 3 grand for a rifle. Live and learn I guess…
