I told ya’ll I would try a high shoulder shot. This was with a 7prc at 130 yards. It was a downhill shot with a 12’ tall stand on the top of the hill. The deer ran about 30 yards. It was a through and through shot. Small hole in and a hole the size of a lemon on the way out. Hornady 175gr ELDX.
Interesting. I’m very surprised he made it 30 yards.
Congrats on the deer!
Thanks! He was a scrapper. Blind in one eye from being gored in eye. Broken G3 on right side. Broken G5 on left side. Broken brow tines.
I was surprised too because he was a mess inside.
I was thinking same thing. Why not drop in his tracks? Is the nerve zone such a small target? I would think shock would have swamped them and the legs would be paralyzed.
Surprised as well. Have used the shoulder shot just once. 190 yards whitetail doe dropped on the spot. Was using a 6.5 creedmoor with 129 grain Browning BXR ammunition
Was my point of impact correct? The downward bullet path from the 12’ stand sitting on top of a hill may not have given the proper path to effect the nervous system. Pretty much destroyed the left shoulder with a 2” exit wound.
So I mentioned that the deer was missing his right eye, nothing but a socket. Since he was such a scraper I thought he might have been gored fighting. That was not the case. I did a European mount and my taxidermist said he had been shot in the eye, most likely from a .22. I know we have suspected poachers, somewhat a common occurrence in Texas. Here are three photos. The right cheek somewhat shattered, but was growing back, looking in the socket you can see the bullet hole, but missed the brain cavity, and the left cheek somewhat shattered but too was growing back together. For him to have suffered such an injury he was in remarkably good shape and health. He weighed 225 on the hoof.
