My new pew pew 45-70

Christmas came early this year. I have wanted a lever action rifle for years and I finally had a reason for one this year after my elk hunt. While the laminate stock that comes on the Marlin 1895 Trapper is good, I save a few ounces and add a lot of cool with this hand guard and butt stock from Ranger Point.

I also redneck engineered the Sako 90 300 WM Blacktop onto this badboy because the RP buttpad was a rubber brick. Surprised how well it fit. Looks very clean.

Mounted is the Arken EP-8 1-8 LVPO. That will get me out to 100 yards easy enough.

Weighs in at 8.75 lbs unloaded. I wouldn’t want it much lighter.

It’s funny 4 years I got a 243 because I was tired of heavy recoil, but my last 2 rifles are serious hammers. Glad you’re making the Backstop Jim

Oh man… that is awesome!!! Tactical lever guns are so cool, and 45-70 is definitely the right call. I need one.

Tell me more about what was required to get the Sako pad to fit? We will likely be adding the marlin soon. Love it.

In that Ranger Point buttstock plate there are 2 unused screw holes that were probably for a screwed in Buttpad, but what it came with was a rubber slip over type. I put a little paint around those holes in the plate and then pressed the Backstop onto it, making sure it was aligned correctly. Lightly pressed. That gave me my marks for my holes. Drilled pilots then 13/64th holes inthe Backstop back plate. Pushed a small Awl throught the Backstop and the punch a hole at the spot. Screwed on the pad. I am sure I am losing some integrity in the Backstop, but this pad at 75-90% integrity is 100% better than the other.

I have a Witt Machine Freakin 45 (also in FDE) supressor on order, probably will arrive some time in Jan. I’ll update when it comes. That’s why I went with the Trapper 16" barrel. Total barrel length after supressor will be about 20".
