Hello there, first time on the community. While I am not new to Guns I am pretty green when it comes to building a gun. I was looking to build a 270 WSM with a Tikka Action. I am seeing things like TX3 S.S 308 Short action and CTR Sort Action and T3X WSM Short Action. but non of these specifically say they will fit a 270 WSM. Not sure what all these mean and looking for some help to clarify. Thank you
All tikka t3x actions are the same. The difference is the bolt face and the bolt catch. For 270 wsm, you will need a short action bolt stop and a magnum bolt face. The magnum bolt face being the more important out of the two as you can easily swap out the bolt catches for cheap. So out of the ones you mentioned the wsm action would work.
Yep, wha Brendan said. So if you don’t already have a Tikka and will be buying a row to build on, I’d buy your Tikka in 6.5 PRC. That will already have the action configured properly to build the 270wsm. It’s a magnum bolt face and short action.
The Tikka action is unique in that it’s all long action, but then they have a different bolt stop to make it behave like a short action. So one action can be used with just two small additional parts to make it work for any cartridge.
Have you considered 6.8 Western instead of the wsm?
I have not thought about the 6.8 as i’ve never been exposed to that caliber before. Most of what I shoot is for bear, deer and elk up here in Montana. Which is usually 300 WM, 300WSM or 270. But I’m definitely all ears. Thank you
Sorry trying to figure out this platform still. I replied to your question below thank you
It’s basically a modern 270 wsm. Made specifically to shoot the long, heavy, aerodynamic bullets that many people like to use these days and that your typical 270 WSM cannot shoot.
Personal opinion, but if you don’t reload I would avoid it. Factory ammo offerings have never been that great and do not look like they’re going anywhere better at all. Maybe even worse. Gun companies seem to be pulling back from offering them too. I really feel like it’s a fine cartridge, but just seems to be dying on the vine.
Are you gonna buy a stripped action or a complete rifle and then take off the barrel?
I was just going to buy an action. Didn’t think much about buying a Gun and striping it.
That is a good point. I wonder if a 6.8 would be easier to find ammo in. Thank you
Cost is almost the same depending on how you do it. J&A outdoors kinda price gouges, but supply and demand I guess. If you do get a tikka with a factory barrel on it, the torque needed to get that thing off approaches infinity. If you have another tikka with the same bolt then you can just buy the stripped receiver without the bolt and share bolts between rifles. But if you just want to do a straightforward build it may be just easier to pay the premium for the complete action from somewhere like J&A where they’ve already taken the barrel off. What barrel are you going with if you don’t mind me asking? Sorry to be nosy. I just really like tikka builds. lol
I’m not sure yet I was going to go with the 270wsm build but some of the guys in this post are making good points so I’m not 100% if I’ll go with that caliber anymore.
I think I replied to you answer above still trying to figure this out
