Hey @backfire, since your high shoulder shot video on deer last year I have been strongly considering this technique. I’ve only had one knock down on a deer and that was with a 180grain 30-06, which is way overkill on a deer (just what I had zero’d when I was hunting that year). Otherwise, I’ve been tracking. Shortest track was about 30yards on a double back - that buck had a weird ricochet and part of the bullet ripped through the esophogus. He expired fast.
But, finding anything on a high shoulder on elk is neer impossible. I haven’t found it if its out there - not a deep dive like your deer video.
Personally, I would love to see a video that goes through the elk anatomy and shot placement the way you did for the deer.
LOL - apparently Cliff Gray did a video where this is covered pretty well just 3 days ago. I have it cue’d to the rifle section as he spends most of the video on Archery:
I will typically always aim for the middle, then if I am a little higher than aim the shot is truly “high shoulder” and if low its a heart shot. Usually DRT ‘dead right there’.
I have used the high shoulder shot for many years with consistently good results. In addition to the deer sized game I’ve high shoulder shot two elk (both with a 300rum) that literally dropped in their tracks. Also shoulder shot a half dozen caribou at varying ranges with 280AI and 25Gibbs - none went ten yards. Much less stressful when you don’t have to worry about tracking game you’ve shot where you aimed.
