Newb here and to long guns looking for input on first rifle

Welcome!

My general advice is to get a Tikka T3x Lite in 6.5 Creedmoor and some Sako ammo. With that combo, you’ll have a supremely accurate rifle with a great action and an inexpensive price.

in my opinion, it’s very important to start out with a rifle you know is accurate so you can know that any mistakes are you and not the gun. So frustrating to learn when there are too many variables at play. That tikka 6.5 creedmoor with Sako ammo is all about removing the variables.

I like that platform first because it’s so easy to change out the barrel to another cartridge, put it in a chassis, whatever down the line as you learn what YOU like. If you buy something more expensive it’ll be a waste later to change the chassis or whatever you want to cistomize.

I also believe 6.5 Creedmoor is the way. It’s one of the most accurate cartiridges, inexpensive, great for shooting out to 1000 yards, and perfectly capable for hunting anything smaller than an elk.

@backfire Thanks so much. The part about the variables rings very true. When helping people get up on shooting a hand gun I usually bring down a mid sized 380 for theM to shoot. Really helps get them on paper and feeling positive before picking up the 9mm. Would the stainless or Black barrel be best long term. Last thing I’ll be putting in quite a few rounds at the start at the range learning and getting acquainted. The thinner walls on the lite, what considerations should I keep in mind. How many rounds before resting It etc.

For carbon fiber stocks, there are a lot out there, I would look at pure precision, rok stock, Oregon mountain rifles. Have you ended up buying one already in a traditional stock, you could look to upgrade to Jim’s chassis platform when it comes out. Or MDT makes a great one.If you go with the T3X light, that’s what I have, I would get the stainless fluted barrel, I haven’t had issues with mine, throwing groups real bad when it heats up. You also live in an area that has fairly extreme elements so if you go with the blue barrel you Will need to maintain it more and be conscious of rust.

On my way to the shop I’m going to order if it’s not in stock the Tika TX3 light rough tech 24.4 or lite in 20” if I can 6.5 Creedmoor @backfire ’s recommendation makes sense. Going back to what my gut was about the 6.5 and I’m going to bite the proverbial bullet. Thanks everybody for your help. I’ll report back with whatever little changes and stuff happen. I have a.Burris veracity. 3-15 44 on the way to me now from Burris. Looking forward to putting in the reps and learning. I’m on a waiting list for Kyle defoor’s class, but if anybody knows of a really amazing trainer and teacher who starts with teaching you how to set up zero and manage getting the platform to operate correctly then moves on to fundamentals of shooting long range. I’d really appreciate some recommendation for a weekend or so Class

So I ordered the Tika TX3 roughtech 24 inch and 6.5 Creedmoor. Should be in in a few days the store owner who I know sort of put down the optic. I’m putting on there saying that that’s like at the bottom of his list and then I told him that I guess I’m at the bottom of your list. And he said no, you’re not I didn’t sell it to you. The optic is the Burris 3–15 44. Seems to be really highly rated and the features look really great. I had bought it before I got on with Jim‘s videos and then saw Jim loving it so I’m confident. Gonna get it gonna take a couple lessons with somebody before I shoot it alone and we’ll see what goes from there. Again, thank you guys so much. I’ll post some pictures for you when it’s all set up. If there’s any other ideas or recommendations or thoughts, let me know what would be a good case for it if anyone has thoughts, that would be great.

As for ammo, Jim recommended the sako any ideas on which one? I typically buy through target sports and get some really great deals. They’re running some really nice specials on the Sig marksman if you guys could list a few that I should try to see what works best with it. That could be in my budget. That would be great. If you have any online sources that tend to be better prices I’d be interested.

Again, thanks so much for all your help

Ha just found the lesson @backfire gives on mounting scopes LOL so edited this

You said you’re in NY, right? Is the Veracity Ph legal to hunt with there?

The new Barnes harvest collection has been awesome ammo. It’s a Sierra tipped game king bullet loaded by Barnes. Historically Sierra makes incredibly accurate bullets. It would be a phenomenal bullet for Whitetail. That’s what I shoot out of my 6.5 PRC. Another good affordable options is the federal fusion. For a bit more, the Barnes TTSX are phenomenal. A 130 or 150 grain would be awesome. I shoot the 150g out of my tikka .308. It’s a copper bullet, so would work well on larger game too. Target sports is great for ammo, I also use Rivertownmunitions.com a lot.

There is no legal restriction on the veracity ph in NY if you can believe It @BEN. You can’t have mags on anything larger than 10 on semi autos or folding stocks on them either. No for grips on semi autos. Handguns t . No suppressors about 1000 ways till Sunday that you can be screwed carrying in the wrong place. You have to retreat to the farthest back against the wallPlace in your home before you can fire. List goes on forever. Be careful driving through the state with your handguns know the laws. Not as bad as NJ in NJ hollow points are illegal- felony. Yet this scope is legal :winking_face_with_tongue:

All kidding aside NY is pretty safe.

@jferreira414 thanks will look at that the sig is a sierra bullet too

Have you tried this Barnes 6.5 Creedmoor 140 grain JHP Jacketed Hollow Point BT granted not such a long range bullet they are running crazy deal in It :man_facepalming:t3:

I haven’t. I mostly shoot whatever I’m going to hunt with, and wouldn’t want to hunt with a hollow point.

I thought it was the eliminator VI that is not legal in some states, but so is Veracity PH as well?

I have a bergara b14 in 6.5 creed and a fierce mtn reaper in 6.5 prc love them both

I’m going to add a hybrid arca/ pickatinny rail to the fore end of the t3x roughtech. Correct me if I’m wrong the bipod should go in the pickatinny section Up front and a tripod if using to the arca more towards the action. I have a tripod but want to add the bipod and need to decide arca or pickatinny for that. Thanks for any guidence. Before I :man_facepalming:t3: pull the trigger :man_facepalming:t3:

Yes, I would do picatinny forward and then arca behind. You can do either arca or picatinny for the bipod. I like picatinny so having the hybrid is a good idea in my mind. Which one are you getting? Salmon river solutions makes a a good one.

@brendangleach thanks. i ordered the j&a outdoors

So I’ve been piecing everything together for the Tika T3 X rough tech. I’ve got most everything in place. The gun was supposed to be here late last week so I’m still waiting. I’ve been really digging in and looking at replacement stocks or chassis that will probably come after I really get a feel for it. Although I might just grab one, you know how that goes I got GAS (gear acquisition syndrome). I’ve been looking at a lot of different there’s

the manners, MCS-LRH-TK

MDT, XRS

horizon, eko

AG adjustable hunter

Bell and Carlson. Not adjustable long range spotter

I’m thinking that it’s going to be an adjustable cheek piece on either a more modern Hunter style or not so modular hunting competition chassis I’m leaning towards the manners. I’d love to hear any input on these thanks again for all your recommendations

I have an xrs with the enclosed forend and arca rail on my Tikka supervarmit, no complaints the steel magazines are definitely better. It is a large stock better suited to the range than hunting on foot, thats not to say you can’t lug it around because I do. It is a very stable rigid platform and a fair improvement on the poly Tikka stock that came with it.
