Newbie questions

Do I resize new brass? I assume they are good to go.

If i resize my previously fired cases and i want to deprime before i clean them, can i do it with my rcbs dies with out resizing them?

The shoulder bump is a new step that i didnt do when i got into reloading 15 years ago. Do my current rcbs dies allow me to do that?

Glad you’re asking beginner questions instead of just pretending to know. You’ll learn way faster.

I don’t resize new brass. Some people do so that it’ll shoot a tiny bit more like the brass on future firings.

Can’t really use a full length resizing due to only knock out the primer. Good news is a depriming die is only $30.

Yes, any dies will allow you to do shoulder bump. It’s just a matter of how deep the die pushes down on the case so it pushes the shoulder back.

I went to sportsmans and saw a decapping die that was for .27 to .45. Is there one for smaller calibers too? Is there one out there that covers all calibers?

On new brass I run it into the sizing die only far enough for the mandrel to make sure the case mouth is round. Just a little bump so the bullet goes in smoothly.

Jim, since we are on the topic, I resize and deprime at the same time then clean and polish. Why do you deprime, clean then resize?

Honestly I’m wondering about the need for recapping before cleaning.

Basically, my reloading to this point has been all about what would be the MOST precise. Lately I’m working on removing steps to see what’s truly necessary to make top quality ammo.

If that’s the goal, then depriming first so you can clean the flash hole is good because then the primer is in a clean pocket. Will it make a noticeable difference? I seriously doubt it.

I’m going to discuss this on the podcast coming out on the 3rd.

As i do some reading on it, some people want a clean brass for the resizing process so they dont get crud inside the resizing die. Plus getting the primer pocket cleaned with the rest of the brass.

Is there a die cleaning process?

They are easy to take apart and clean. I use brake or carb cleaner.
