Non-Traditional Bullets

In my head it makes sense but I’d rather ask those who know better. I’m reloading for my 30-30 and since I’m in CA I will most likely use the Hornady 140g Monoflex but I’m curious if I could use other .308 bullets? All bullets would have a polymer tip so there’s no worry of a round going off in the tube and I might want to go lower weight if I wanted some extra muzzle velocity and a higher BC bullet.

The 140 gr monoflex seems like it might be the best option if your trying to extend your effective range. The only other bullet that comes to mind is the Barnes 150gr TSX FN (flat nose). Either way with the best listed velocities of 2300 fps your effective range will be around 200 yards maybe 250. Using a lighter bullet will increase your velocity some, but will usually lower your BC. That being said, with an inherently short range cartridge like the 30-30 I wouldn’t worry much about the BC of the bullet. Find out the minimum velocity for expansion plug it into a ballistic calculator and see which one will reach farther.

There are certainly other options, but just a polymer tip isn’t quite good enough for safety. Some of those polymer tips are sharp and hard. The mono flex is made out of a softer material.

Having said that, I have never heard of this actually happening that a bullet ignites another cartridge’s primer. Just don’t let yourself be the first :grinning:
