I do a lot of pest control on broadacre farms, and I’m looking for my next rifle. Currently own a 223 which is great out to 200 then wind gets the best of it. I’m after a modern twist cartridge to shoot highish bc high expansion bullets. Ideally it would be capable of making shots out to 500m on stuff like small deer. Would also like to be able to shoot multiple shot in short amounts of time, and spend plenty of time practicing without worrying about cooking the barrel. Kind of like the competition shooters are doing I suppose which is why the br cartridges come to mind. The 22 arc also could be an option. Any ideas on what cartridge and what bullets? Cheers
The ever so debated, hipster 6.5cm sounds like a great option. Tons of ammo choices and relatively cheap w long barrel life. 6mm could be great as well or 22 creed, but not as easy to find ammo for those.
Yes the creedmore looks like a good option, its probably the biggest cartridge I’m considering. I live in outback Australia so I’ve come to the conclusion that if it’s not a 243 or 22-250 I’m going to have to reload anyway but I’m fine with that, actually I probably prefer it.
Think this post nailed it.
22 CM, 6 CM, or 6.5 CM. Maybe the 25 CM if you think it has legs to stick around.
I’m thinking the 6 and 6.5 would eventually surpass the 22 CM in wind deflection at longer ranges, but here’s a comparison out to 300 yards from Jim.
Sounds like you’re describing 22 creedmoor. I think it’d be a perfect fit. Better bc but similar recoil to the 223 and more power for deer. That’d be my pick.
Yes it would be ideal except burning out barrels concerns me due to the logistics of re barreling in a remote area. I could carry two guns but if I have pests out of 223 range and they aren’t moving I’d like to be able to keep shooting whether there are 5 or 50 of them. Yet again people have been shooting 22-250s for years without complaining about barrels. Too many good options claiming to be the best option.
If you want to take quick recovery shots, 6.5cm in a AR10 format. Multi round magazines, and fire as fast as you can pull the trigger.
In Australia that’s a pretty big ask it’d be ideal but the licencing, justification and training is a nightmare and at the trajectory we are heading it could be taken away within a few years.
