I picked up a Tikka Varmint today in 22-250 for hunting coyote, coon, beaver and whitetail on my farm. At $875 I feel its an amazing value. The Super Varmint would be nicer but twice the cost. I wont feel bad about my wife and kids mistreating this one a bit.
Nice gun. I was looking for one like that a few months ago and all they had was the Super varmint in 223. I bought it and love it but wish it was in 22-250.
Great choice. I bet it’ll shoot well. What scope are you going with?
I have an Arken EPL4 and a EP5 that im going to try on it and see gow it goes. This gun has a heavy barrel so i want to keep the weight down if i can. However I will be hunting from sticks or a tripod so i guess it doesn’t matter all that much.
I bet it’s going to be a tac driver.
How much does the gun weigh
This one is 8.6 lbs as it has a heavy barrel profile. The Tikka SuperLite also comes in 220-250 and its only 6.4 lbs.
Hey everybody! I thought I would give a little update on my Tikka Varmint now that I have had time to put it through its paces and I gotta tell you, its the best rifle I have ever shot. It is so accurate that it only took me 2 rounds to zero the scope and then I had a 3 round .6 MOA group. Then I moved to a new target and hit dead center and followed up with a .65 MOA group. Holy sh*t. The whole thing was so surreal.
Maybe I am just a catfish guy trying caviar for the first time but I was impressed. For $875 from my FFL I feel its quite the bargain.
I was using Norma Tip Strike Varmint, 55 gr Ammo. I haven’t tried anything else yet.
I’m jealous LOL
I’m keep thinking of getting one
I really interested and want the 22-250 ( special coyote hunt ) but friends saying to get the 233
Does the job too and it’s cheaper for clinking just targets as well
I went through the same decision process, but I really wanted the velocity of the 22-250. I will be reloading to keep the cost down. I know this is dumb, but I said if I get the .223 I will always wish I got the 22-250, but I wouldn’t feel the same way the if the situation was reversed. ![]()
Funny thing, my neighbor texted me and asked me if I bought a cannon, its not quiet, lol.
True
I most likely will end up with the 22-250 as well and I started and will everything anyways
IF I CAN FIND SOME PRIMERS LOL ever
In Canada Alberta ( privat sale ) they go up $600-$800 for 1000
Stupid
That’s insane! I’ll post my primer solution after I have tested it.
That’s awesome! I’m having gun envy. I bought the super varmint in 223. And while it’s very accurate I’m wishing I had the extra velocity of the 22-250.
Hey this is an old thread, but I am trying to figure out what is it that makes the Super Varmint 2x as much as the regular Varmint?? It looks like it has a green stock, possibly with an adjustable cheek piece… is that the only difference? I mean, I can get a pretty decent aftermarket stock that might even be better than that for way less than $900… am I missing something? If not, then I agree with you–it seems like the Varmint is a total bargain. Great caliber choice too, it’s on my list to get a 22-250.
I think the differences are a threaded barrel, the stock and a ceracoted barrel. I love the rifle. To me the price differential was nuts. I dont want barrel attachments, so that was fine by me. Eventually I will put it in a chassi, but the stock chassi works. I was shooting this 10 inch steel at 500yds and it grouped really well.
I dusted off my 22-250 a couple of weeks ago. Reloaded a bunch of bullets with 50gr v-max and H380. 37.9 grains seemed to work best so far. I haven’t messed with the seating depth yet. I am worried that the H380 will act differently in the winter months for coyotes
Wow that does look fantastic for 500 yds! I found a compare tool on the Tikka website, right after I posted this question. I still can’t make sense of the massive price jump. With the extra features, I feel like the Super Varmint should be no more than like 1,200 or so if the normal one is ~875.
Average price for the varmint is around 1000 dollars. 875 is a steal. If you took that gun to a gunsmith and had him thread the barrel it would be 250 dollars. Have it coated and it would cost another 250. The stock is much better stiffer and adjustable. That would run you another 300 or so. I don’t think it’s out of line to pay 1600 for it. And it shoots lights out! I love mine. If you don’t like the price just stick with a Ruger or Savage. They will still shoot well just won’t look as good.
