Powder prices rising

Anyone finding reasonably priced powder? I am having to pay $500 for 8 pounders at my local store. He said every order he makes the powder goes up. Is this just bidenomics or is another shortage in our future?

I have been buying mostly online or from big box stores when they have stock. I haven’t seen any 8# bottles going for $500. They are more in the $300-$400 range. Thanks to other Backfire members, I learned many of the online retailers will periodically run “no hazmat fee” sales.

I will share a quick story about a local shop. I had done business there for many years and bought several firearms, my safe, and copious amounts of ammo from them. I started reloading a little over a year ago. Earlier this year, I went in to buy powder and found they were charging $80+ for one pound bottles. I scoffed at the price and got a very interesting response. The guys noted that they are selling that high because they can. People are buying it. I don’t think Bidenomics is helping, but I think there are other factors at play.

Go on-line. Go to powder valley. Don’t know what you need but look at the Ramshot products. I have been shooting either IMR or Hodgdon products for 30 years, started using the Ramshot just to keep the price reasonable and it has worked fine for me.

I just picked up some Ramshot Hunter for my 300 WSM from Powder Valley.

I do load development for people as a little side job and all I will use for that are powders from Hodgdon’s extreme line. I wouldn’t mind trying some ram shot on my own rifles to see how it does.

If you get a minute, go to the Ultimate Reloader site, and look up a test they did comparing temp. sensitivity of (I think…) Varget and Ramshot Tac. Good info and brings some reality to the discussion of just how much temp sensitivity powders by type can have; and also I think they have another one on the impact of velocity swings to show changes in POI at different distances.
Good luck.

Just picked up Retumbo at Scheels for 350 for an 8 pounder

What powder are you trying to buy? Like others have said most 8lb jugs of powder are going for 3-400 range online, and it’s been around that price for the last few years. Of course, shipping and hazmat charges can play a role as well

I just paid 480 for a 8 pounder of h1000 and that’s how much all of the 8 pounders my local shop has in stock are selling for. I looked on midway and it’s the same price after hazmat I know not to long ago it was 350-400 on just about everything that’s why I was wondering about the price increase. From what I’ve been told all of the powder you see at the 350-400 price range is old stock that the stores have not sold yet and that the next shipment they get in will be more expensive.

The hazmat fee is a kicker, but many of the online retailers periodically run “free hazmat” specials. I’ve found good deals on powder and avoided the pesky fee.
