Public land DIY mule deer hunting

Anyone have any tips on areas/units to look into hunting for Mule Deer in the west? Colorado, Idaho, Utah, etc… it is getting annoyingly long between tags here in AZ so looking to branch out to surrounding states lol! Continuing on my quest to get something bigger than a forky on the ground! Thanks for the help and guidance guys.

I called outdoors international to get their advice on where to apply.

I used chpt GT to tell me which units to apply for draw/OTC lol

I don’t know why I haven’t thought of this yet lol! Might be the most useful thing chagpt provides😆

Depending on the unit and which season you choose, Colorado tags can be almost guaranteed. I got a buck tag and then picked up a leftover doe tag. Bucks were nocturnal by 3rd rifle but did get a doe for meat.

Mind if I ask what region you went to? Southwest near Durango/pagosa area is where I was thinking without having done much research yet. Thank you for the suggestion though! I never think/always forget about doe hunts, AZ doesn’t have any haha.

I was about 30 miles North of Vale on the South end of 15.

Do you have any points in any states?

I would start putting in for UT general deer points if I were you.

I did my first mule deer hunt in Nevada in late October. My buddy and I both tagged out. Although we were on a guided hunt, there were a lot of DIY hunters in the units we were in (171, 172, 173). Saw a ton of deer. Weather got progressively warmer after the first day, so had to work for the second one and got him on the final day. Cool country up there and worth checking out.

I just killed in Pagosa on Oct 27.. it was a nice 4x4 buck it was also the only buck I saw and I hunted hard. Lots of young deer around but not a lot of bucks..Not sure if Pagosa is good right now.. It was HOT though. I have hunted unit 75 (durango bayfield ) and it was good… Just be prepared to see a hunter on every bush..
