Question on the modified Hornady Case/Cartridge guide

I did search the web first. So, I received my Horndady OAL tool, modifed case and case guage today. What I am confused about is the modified case does not fit in the cartridge gauge, it stops about 1/4 inch from seating? Do I need to size the modified case before use? I have some ammo coming Tuesday to test in the guage, but I am leary that something is off?

BTW, Merry Christmas! Sorry, I am just geeking on the reloading stuff.

The most accurate method of outings the modified case to send 2 fired casings to Hornady and have them modify them. You could check the modified case with a cartridge checker that would check for the case being within SAMI specks. If it fits there there must be something in the rifle bore. Most likely the modified case is not within specs.

Apologies if I am not being concise, I am concerned that either the Modified Case or the Cartridge Guide is out of spec. I will pull out the calipers after church and get case measurements.

Oh, Ok. I wasn’t understanding you were talking about that cartridge gauge. Since i have zero experience with it, I will bow out and let the experts weigh in.

Only thing I can think to check, will the modified case fit in your rifle’s chamber and allow the bolt to close?

My experience with Hornady – I had purchased a Hornady cartridge gauge for 300 PRC. After sizing cases (Redding Match/Comp dies) they still would not seat in the gauge. First, contacted RCBS who determined dies were fine and in spec. Bought a duplicate/second Hornady gauge and now resized brass fit fine. Spoke with Hornady and per their request, sent both back to them. They determined first gauge was out-of-spec. They credited cost of first gauge towards purchase of other Hornady product. They could have been a bit more generous considering my $$ for postage and inconvenience but admitted their error. My advice, send the gauge back to be checked.
