Questions and thoughts on the Chassis

Hi Jim @backfire

Just watched your longer format video on the chassis posted by ballistics lab. Super excited about everything I’m seeing so far! A few questions and thoughts.

1: What is the material that the inlet area is made of? I assume it is a 3d printed plastic/polymer? Maybe a carbon grilamid or similar? Are you seeing any differences in accuracy between that and a cnc aluminum inlet? Obviously a host of benefits from the additive manufacturing just curious why no one else would be doing this.

2: Was just out shooting a hnt26 and really didn’t like the way that the grip and trigger guard hit my middle finger (see photo below of that area on your chassis). Seems like it would be more comfortable to undercut the trigger guard like most pistols are doing these days(see red dots) Seems like that cnc’ed piece of aluminum would be easy to undercut or round to avoid sharp edges on the middle finger.

3: I’ve heard others ask about magnets to keep the stock folded, just watching the video seems like a no brainer to have a magnet that screws into the triangular stage saver spot, maybe it can even grab the qd flush cup on the stock if it lines up. Maybe this is a problem for after release as well

Just a few thoughts, curious if others have noticed similar things or have answers to these questions that I’ve missed!!

Thanks yall! -Porter

Thanks for the interest.

  1. It’s an advanced newer nylon material. Not to be coy but we’ve decided not to say the exact type we’re using for that center section. It took us many months to find and we feel like it’s a significant advantage because of its stiffness and durability so we’d rather not tip off the competition.

  2. I’ve never heard of anyone having that issue. I will check and see if it can be brought up a little but we have some alignment posts right about there that keep the grip from twisting.

  3. We’re looking at solutions for locking back if people want that. Most don’t really work because there is adjustable length of pull so the buttstock wouldn’t fold back to the same spot depending on how you have it set.

Nobody is gonna care about lockback once you actually try it though. On a backpack it’s already strapped down and on your back in a sling it’s already held by the sling because there’s a qd on both sides.

Plus, I just find the lockback feature on other chassis like the Hnt26 or the fierce mountain reaper to be really irritating. You can’t just swing it closed. You press the button, move it 90 degrees and have to press it again, then you can finally close it. Drives me nuts.

But I know some people really feel like they want a lockback. We’re still looking at it but I don’t see any easy solutions.

So helpful, thank you so much for your thoughtful reply!

Totally makes sense to not share the exact material, was mostly curious about metal vs plastic.

I definitely agree that the locking folded feature is super annoying on the hnt26, definitely don’t want to be futzing with that when there an animal staring at you! That’s where a magnet might be nice, minimizing rattling while allowing rapid deployment. No doubt it’s 100x easier said than done!

Jim,

Do you think the Tikka Lite in 7 PRC accuracy will improve a bunch in the Backlite . Or have you already tested that? Just wondering
