Never thought I’d be asking this question, but what open/peep sights would you recommend? I haven’t used iron sites since I was a kid and have no idea what options are available these days. What’s a reasonable shooting distance using these?
Did your deer unit get weapon restrictions also? I’ve been wondering the same thing. There’s not a lot of options for a stock rifle with open sights.
Yikes. I may be facing the same problem in Itah but I haven’t looked at open sights yet. I’m guessing 125yds max but I almost never shoot open sight.
I like the idea of the browning BLR. It has some good cartridge options and if you’re going open sight why not go leveraction right?
Lever action rifles often have open sights included; also some bolt actions do, such as Ruger’s Guide Gun, Scout Rifle, or “African” or “Alaskan” models of certain rifles. Depending on your cartridge and the expected environment you are hunting in, you can usually adjust and re-zero the sights for 50, 100 or 150 yards.
A lot of this is going to be personal preference but I really like a peep sight (aperture sight). If you have a Henry, or like a Marlin 1894, 1895, 336, etc. you can switch from an open sight or buckhorn style to a peep style sight, there are aftermarket ones available from companies like Skinner sights, or KRA sights. Some models of the Henry and Marlins even have Skinner sights included, like the trapper models of the new Ruger-made Marlins.
Could always remove the scope and atttach a pic rail, then your options open up a lot to iron sights, like magpul.
Are Palma sights allowed?..
The search continues…but I’m a bit surprised Williams/Skinner/Lyman or some other company hasn’t come up with some universal front sight like the picture so you don’t have to mess with your barrel to install a front sight.
I did see another that would screw onto a threaded barrel, but they wanted over $1k for it.
Just crazy pricing when I can go buy a brand new rifle with iron sights for cheaper.
My experience with a peep sight comes from hunting mule deer in Colorado muzzleloader season. I will say that on the shooting range you may be able to accurately shoot 150 yrds to maybe 200 but in the field its an entirely different ball game. Lighting plays a HUGE factor on how far you will be able to shoot. I would plan on 100 yds max with peep sight. This was back when I had 40 yr old eyes so its probably worse now as I haven’t taken my smokepoles out for over a decade.
Good luck!
