Idaho has a weird tag system. You log on tomorrow no later than 10am mst (I recommend half hour early) and get issues a random number that allows you to be in the draft for picking tags. They go fast if you want a hot unit. This is for 2025 tags.
Idaho is one of the best states for nonresidents because there is no points system. Great for people wanting to get started hunting out west.
I believe you can buy it when you buy the otc tag, and I also believe you need some kind of proof of hunters ed. I bought my license already just in case. This is all too much excitement.
Where is a “good” unit in Idaho? My brother lives in Grand Junction, CO. so we would be looking at driving from there. Just trying to get an idea of how much we should allocate for travel time.
I got mine but it is all sold out now. My niece, who grew up in Idaho and her parents still live there and she would hunt deer on their property did not get a deer tag at around 51800. She lives in a different state with her husband. Would be nice if some kind of system for families so they could hunt together. When I looked over 65000 people were signed up at the start for 28000 tags combo for deer and elk. Idaho could double their price to non-res and still sell out. My friend was around 42000 and got his. I was 13500. Depends what unit of course the way it is divided. In previous years the whitetail tags would not sell out for a few months.
I think this might be the last year idaho is doing otc tags for non residents.
Might be a good thing it would prevent the frustration of not getting through or having the system malfunction ( which it does every year) .
I’m hunting close to home the next couple years anyway. New mexico maybe, maybe colorado my brother has a fishing cabin in unit 50.
