Results from best “all-around” cartridge for hunting big game in North America

Good morning,

Just for fun, I had the chance to run a poll yesterday on a Facebook hunting group asking the question of what is the best “all-around” cartridge for hunting big game in North America. 2,515 votes as of this morning and here were the results:

  1. 300 Win Mag/PRC/WSM (650 votes, 25.84%)

  2. 270 Win. (349 votes, 13.88%)

  3. 30-06 (280 votes, 11.13%)

  4. 7 Rem Mag (245 votes, 9.74%)

  5. 7 PRC (200 votes, 7.95%)

  6. 6.5 CM/PRC (144 votes, 5.73%)

  7. 308 (107 votes, 4.25%)

  8. 7mm-08 (75 votes, 2.98%)

  9. 6.8 Western (72 votes, 2.86%)

  10. 280 A.I. (61 votes, 2.43%)

*Percentages won’t add up to 100% because of all the random poll options added by voters. I just grabbed the top 10.

*I do wish I had separated out the 6.5 CM/PRC and the 300 WM/PRC/WSM, but my interpretation based on comments is that most of those votes are for the 6.5 PRC and 300 WM respectively.

*I know specific cartridges are better for certain types of animals, but as much as I’d love to have ever single cartridge on the list, I think the reality is most hunters are only getting 1-2 guns for big game.

I agree 100% with #1. Now having said that I do not exclusively use my 300 WM but I do most of the time. Stupid weather is preventing me from getting my 7mm PRC dialed in. BTW I have 1 thru 7 minus 4 and then some not in the top 10.
