They look nice at least… but I guess the real question is… did they fix the action/magazine feeding yet? I had an American Ranch (gen 1) that was just awful. Feeding as well as extraction–I couldn’t get through a magazine without having to drop it out, and run the bolt a couple of times real hard, and then reinsert. So frustrating.
I have found for my Ranch in 300 BO that my feeding issues are vastly improved when moving off of pmag to promag with roller follower for 5 rd mags . world of difference. Bullet type is an issue with the 220 gr fmj being horrible but the subx and barnes 110s seem to feed fine.
I don’t mind the aesthetic, though it is an odd choice. I am just impressed with the features they include standard–cerakote, 3 position saftey (as opposed to two), fluting, oversized bolt knob, threaded 5/8x24, muzzle brake, AICS magazine…impressive. Must be responding to the success of competitors like the CVA Cascade. One other thing I would say is that the trigger appears to be same as the old models, which is a bummer. Those triggers are quite heavy and squishy feeling. Not a fan.
Just got a Gen 2 300 blk out in. Going to have to send it to Ruger… Bolt wont even cycle with no ammo in the mag… When I try to cycle with ammo it doesn’t do right. It may cycle 3-4 out of 10 and those 3-4 are very rough. Hopefully I got a lemon and others are not having this problem.
Dang. Sorry to hear that. The “won’t cycle with no ammo” issue is probably just the mag locking open when the msg is empty right? That’s just how it works with a pmag and is designed that way. It’s locking up with ammo in it too though? Sorry to hear that.
Yes it is. I think the mag is not seated right (maybe it’s locking in to high up?) or there is just to much pressure from the mag spring keeping the bolt from functioning properly when ammo is in there. Ruger generally takes the gun back and pays for a return label. I’ve had to send a couple guns back to them. That was the case here. Sent me a return label. Plan on sending it back to them as soon as I can.
I saw your review on Youtube. What caliber would you recommend? Or anyone else who already has one. I looked on their website and the “Standard” 20" barrel are all $729, which is still cheap. I am thinking for that price you couldn’t go wrong, almost. Thanks.
This comment about twist rate made me want to check to see if they reduced the twist rate for 22-250 (I have seen some manufacturers offering faster twists now like 1:9), but they aren’t listing it as an option, not even under the “Coming Q1 2024.” Instead, they are going to have a 22 ARC. Ugh. No sign of 22 Creedmoor either.
22 ARC? Really? Thought that was primarily going to be an AR thing… for the Ruger American, I would think it is a better fit for the “Ranch” model.
I have the gen 1 in 300bo. With the magpul pmag it is finicky. Type of bullet makes a difference. I tried 220 gr fmj AAC subs and it is not happy. I have the hornady subs and will cycle with one less than full and gets better as magazine empties. As I said on other thread promag with roller works fine. I use 5 rnd mags because that is the laws here for hunting.
