I’m just gutted by the senseless killing of Charlie Kirk. I really hope everyone in this country pauses and realizes that civilized debate is healthy. Taking a life because of political differences is a coward’s solution.
I agree. The intolerance for differing viewpoints in this country is at an incredible level. Friends for years no longer can discuss politics or even be friends any longer. I hope the shooter is caught quickly.
Terrible. Why are people so afraid of someone who built his career on having thoughtful and respectful debates?
My late father-in-law once told me that people who treat their politics like their religion are the problem because everyone who disagrees with them is immoral and therefore evil. Politics may be the worst god of all.
We, as a nation…perhaps as a world, have lost the ability to have a discussion, one person vs. another, one perspective vs. another. If person A disagrees with person B, then person A should try to persuade INTELLIGENTLY towards their viewpoint.
Should that persuasive attempt fail, then both parties can just agree to disagree.
Taking things WAY TOO FAR as we have seen far too often of late is not the answer.
Makes me think of these scriptures…
“Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.”
“And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.“
At first glance it seems depressing, but I find it gives courage because all these things were prophesied to happen. We were told they are gonna happen. And if we can just hold on to our faith, and seek the Lord in all this madness, He will be there for us and ours. And everything will work out in the end.
Well said! There is no difference between Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and zealots in this country. They are of the same mindset. Their way is the only way. No compassion. No compromise. No tolerance.
Once upon a time…debate and discussion of differences were good things because they usually resulted in a compromise agreeable to the parties. It seems this is no longer the case. Being self-righteous, not compromising, and perceiving to win at any and all cost for control and enrichment are the new norm.
Don’t be surprised if the word “amicable’ disappears from the human language in the near future.
Maybe I am missing something here but what sort of debate is “healthy” if someone has to wear body armor and surround themselves with a security detail to participate? Seems more risky than healthy.
Jim, it may less about being afraid and more about what the rich or famous have in common: having to protect themselves from obsessed people with nothing better to do.
Sadly, there are way too many pieces of evidence showing how absolutely unhinged “some” people are out there.
I find it very troubling that this country is in its’ current state of being; never in my life did I think that this Country would be where we are today…
In response to your question, there is no healthy debate when you have to wear body armor and have significant security details.
