Just walked out of my LGS with a Savage 111 in 30-06 for $20. Yes, $20. It has rust issues and the barrel is trash but the rest looks like a little cleaning/rust removal is all that is needed. Now to decide what to build INEXPENSIVELY for now. I have a Browning A Bolt Medalion in 300WSM that is a good hunting rifle for big game and I have several 6mm target rifles. The 280AI is a good choice but is it going be any different than my 300WSM? What about a 6.5 long action like 6.5-06? I want a hunting rifle so the Boyd’s At One stock will be in the plan. Who makes a good budget barrel?

How about a 25-06? That’d be pretty sweet. Cheap barrell? Try preferred barrel blanks and see if a prefit could work.
Jim, I settled on the 25-06 mainly because I wanted to go inexpensive and found a new “take off” barrel on eBay for $150. I completely disassembled and cleaned it with the only issue being a possible mag spring that rusted .
