Has anyone had the opportunity to find a Seekins Precision Havak PH3 25 Creedmoor? Everywhere I look they are sold out or not carried by the vendor. If you have one could you give a quick review of what your impression is of the rifle? With a 1:8 twist I was curious about how heavy of bullet tested.
I highly doubt they’ve hit the shelves yet. Seekins tends to announce available calibers before they start producing those calibers. I haven’t seen a 277 or a seven backcountry ph3 yet, yet they’ve been listed as available ever since the ph3 was rolled out last year
I’m not wild about that 1:8 personally. I know they insist that that twist rate has worked for them but the Barnes bullet I would want to use will not stabilize with that twist, at least according to Barnes.
I know Seekins has a great name, but you could go with a Horizon firearm as I’ve seen 25 creedmoor available. And there accuracy, with there guns is well documented-worth emailing for a price
Do you have an action of an old gun you could build on? You can get a Bartlein barrel for $900 and a Backfire chassis (or other brand) for $849 (plus Backfire Plus discount).
You’d end up with an absolutely TOP OF THE LINE rifle and save a few hundred bucks.
I really like the Horizon 25 Creed. Just note that in our testing, it did MUCH better with a suppressor on.
I have been debating whether to use a Howa 1500 SA that I have and could rebarrel. I don’t like that Seekins is a 1:8 where I will would be limited to around a lighter bullet for longer range. But for the price it has a lot of features. The Horizon would be my ultimate with a 1:7.5 twist, but more expensive. It’s always a question of how much does the budget allow.
I just got a response to a message from Seekins asking for an estimated day when the 25 CM would be available and they responded that it would probably be 4-5 months. Bummer…
This was their response when I asked them about the twist rate:
While SAAMI provides general guidelines for the 25 Creedmoor, they don’t dictate specific twist rates. We ultimately selected a 1:8 twist because it delivered the best results in our live-fire trials. While a 1:7 might seem ideal on paper, our testing showed that the 1:8 provided much tighter groups and more consistent precision across a wider variety of ammunition. We chose the 1:8 because it offered the best real-world performance
It would be nice to know what they tested. If I look at the Berger Twist Rate Stability calculator it shows that the stability of their 135 gr hybrid is marginal. Guessing that under 500 yards would be ok but after that instability?
I guess it depends. I’ve had a number of bullets show complete instability well within 100 yards.
If you hunt at significant altitude it can improve things
Edit
Actually thinking about it a little more, I’m almost certain there is a hornady podcast out there that says that bullet stability improves at longer ranges
I am looking at Horizon and they don’t have any 25 CM. Bet will be 6 months before anyone has any stock as Seekins is saying. I like that the Horizon is 1:7.5 twist.
