Shooting with both eyes open

Hey @backfire, silly question. I was just wondering if you might comment on shooting with both eyes open vs. only the shooting eye. One of my buddies that was a sharp shooter in the military said he was always trained to close the non-shooting eye. But I notice that you and many other always shoot with both eyes open. I’ve practiced both ways, but I’m better closing the non-shooting eye. Thoughts?

For scoped rifles, both eyes open has benefits, esp if your dominant hand and dominant eye are on the same side.

If however you are cross hand/eye dominant, that can create issues with both eyes open, thus the need to close one eye.

For pistol, I’ve learned to shoot with both eyes open. I learned umpteen years ago to close the non-shooting eye when aiming through an optic and I never really thought about it. Neither have I tried shooting a rifle with both eyes open. Just curious, what are the benefits?

I shoot with both eyes open so I can view the target through the scope and the bubble level through the other eye.

Yep, and also helps out with having better situational awareness of what is going on outside of your scope’s FOV. Also, if you lose your target during The Recoil, your other eye can track which way it’s going, what it’s doing, Etc

Since I’m shooting most days, my face gets tired if I close one eye. Sometimes I’ll close one eye for a moment to get a clearer look for a second, but then I’ll go back to both eyes. It’s really just for comfort for me.

When doing tactical shooting or shotgun it can be a major advantage to have both eyes open. With a rifle scope I don’t really feel like it matters much as long as you can see well.

Thanks for the guidance! This is always a helpful forum and I appreciate you guys taking the time to chime in.

This is helpful to know. I’m cross eye dominate so that makes sense of why I’m doing better keeping my non-shooting eye closed. Thank you sir!

I’m cross dominant and have always shot with my dominate eye. I’m right handed but left eye dominant.
I shoot left handed. I only shoot both eyes open with handguns and lpvo on low power and red dots. I do shoot handguns right handed most of the time.
