So, we’ve discussed the loads that you all would suggest for the Sig Cross in 6.5, but what about in .308? I do not (yet) have reloading, so I would appreciate some factory loads you’ve had good experience with as well some hand loads. Thanks!
Sorry, don’t have a 308 Sig cross but hopefully someone else will have some experience with it.
My Sig Cross 308 really likes RUAG 168gr match and the Federal Gold Medal Match SMK 168gr & 175gr. With a slight advantage to the 168gr.
I just picked up one of these at a gun show this weekend. Got a great deal on it too. I have a bunch of different factory .308 (I may have “overstocked” during the scamdemic) so I am going to test everything I have through it. Will update this thread with my findings.
Okay I started testing loads on the Sig Cross, and I have to say, how are y’all dealing with this piece-o-junk folding stock? I would have almost preferred it to be a fixed stock. The folding mechanism creates a wobbly pivot point, and makes it hard to get good groups with anything! It’s also not that easy to fold–push the button and pull up on the stock so that it can fold, but it is REALLY hard. And yet at the same time when it is fully snapped into position it’s still wobbly as hell. You’d think being as stiff as it is to fold/unfold, it would stay more solid, but I guess we get the worst of both worlds. Did I just get a dud, should I try to contact Sig Sauer about it, or is this what other people are experiencing as well? If so, how do you manage to stabilize it, so it isn’t moving around on you all the time?
I have had my Sig Cross 308 for over 6 months and have not had any issue with a wobbly extended stock.
On mine when the stock is extended, it stays rigid and I have not had any issue getting sub 1/2” groups.
Update on this, fixing the “wobbly” issue turned out to be easy. You can just tighten the screws that hold the hinge together, so open into the folding position, tighten, then straighten back out to the normal extended position, where I have left it since and it has remained solid.
As for testing some loads, I finally had time today to try a few. Here are results. Average of 3x4-shot groups, and the best group:
Federal Premium Gold Medal Sierra Matchking 168 gr
Avg: 0.70"
Best: 0.25"
Sig Sauer Copper Hunter Eliteseries 150 gr
Avg: 1.62"
Best: 1.35"
Winchester Copper Impact 150 gr
Avg: 2.78"
Best: 1.25"
Hornady Precision Hunter ELD-X 178 gr
Avg: 2.10"
Best: 1.37"
Hornady Black A-MAX 155 gr
Avg: 3.51"
Best: 1.94"
Ammo, Inc FMJ 150 gr
Avg: 3.05"
Best: 1.80"
So out of those 6 factory offerings, obviously it’s the Fed. Prem. Gold Medal match ammunition by a mile. I have to test out some Sierra hunting loads as well, another time.
Dang, some EXCELLENT groups with the federal!
For sure–among the best groups I have had with anything I’ve shot… now to find a hunting bullet that shoots sub-moa in this gun…
Might try Berger hybrid hunters. Completely different gun than what you have but in my 308 they shoot almost like a target round.
Personally I tend to favor the all copper bullets or bonded bullets however for hunting. Never found one of those which groups nearly as well as the above hybrid hunters. That is until I started handloading.
Mind if I ask what you are loading in a copper projectiles in 308? Living in CA, I am restricted to only non-lead projectiles for hunting. Also a totally different gun, but I haven’t found a factory load that groups as well as lead core in my gun. I recently started reloading and haven’t yet worked up a load for my 308. I can go by the published load data, but would also be curious to hear what has worked well for others.
Oh man, I just realized after rereading that the post I made was a bit misleading.
In 308, I have yet to work up a copper bullet load, I haven’t even started yet. My particular 308, which is a Seekins, does ok with Lapua Naturalis all copper Factory ammo but still not spectacular.
What I should have said above is that I’ve never been impressed with any Factory loaded copper ammo in any gun I’ve ever shot. Primarily for me that 7 mm-08 but also includes seven Magnum and 280 Ackley along with the 308. That is in terms of accuracy only. In terms of terminal performance they are awesome, at least the TSX and lrx are.
My first caliber for hand loading was 7 mm-08 and the Hand loads I made for it with 120 ttsx are awesome in terms of accuracy compared to the factory loadings. Just finished wrapping up load development with a 139 lrx in the 280 ackley. Impressive but the 7-08 still beats it in terms of absolute accuracy.
308 will either be next in line, or one further down the line.
