Small game hunting

Hey folks, anyone out there into small game hunting? I think my dad took me out to shoot squirrels and rabbits like once each when I was young, but I haven’t done it since. Looking to get back into that. I sometimes have to shoot other small pests like armadillos, coyotes, raccoons, etc. but that is different–I would like to go harvest some small game to try cooking it (and if I don’t like it, I’ll feed it to my dog which I’m sure she will love). For those doing it, what do you prefer to use? 22 LR? 22 Mag? Or like a 410 shotgun (I think that’s what my dad had me use, it was a simple break action if I remember right). Also, how do I find rabbits? I got squirrels like the day is long but I never see hares around my property, to I have to go searching…

I think it depends. When you start getting into the predator hunting at distance then I believe the 22LR might be on the smaller end of things. For squirrel or rabbit both are great. One could also use a 12/16/20/28 gauge shotgun for hunting. A 223 up to a 6mm also makes a lot of sense with appropriate bullets if larger predators like coyotes or larger varmints like groundhogs are in the table.

I use a custom built 10/22, mainly grouse ptarmigan and squirrels.
My wife has a .410
I guess it’s what works best for you😊
