So I cut 4 inches off my barrel

Ruger American Go Wild in 7 PRC. Came with 24-inch barrel. Bought a Silencerco Scythe-TI suppressor. Gun was too long to carry while hunting.

After cutting off 4 inches from barrel and replacing the stock muzzle brake with the Scythe, the overall length and weight are basically the same.

The average velocity using Hornaday ELD-X 175 ammo had been 2844 ft/sec with the 24-inch barrel. The average this morning with the shorter barrel and suppressor was 2739 so a loss of 105 feet/second. I made the decision to shorten the barrel based on an estimated loss of 25 feet per inch so pleased with the result. The Eagle Ballistics app indicates the rifle is still capable of hunting large game out to 650 yards (2000+ ft/sec and 1500+ ft/lbs of energy).

Now the bonus. We have all heard of Hornaday’s debacle with its 7 PRC ammo. I tried Federal Premium with the same ELD-X 175 bullet and the average velocity was 2790: an increase of 51ft/sec. So overall there was a loss of about 50 ft/second and I now have a shorter hunting rifle with an awesome suppressor. I call that a win/win!

Cool deal! Nice for a plan to work out the way you expected it to.

Thats interesting. I don’t have numbers to support the following, more anecdotal evidence. I have my 7PRC zeroed with Federal Eldx 175 shooting .75 minute. I did a Honrnady PH to test since it the same bullet and grain and found it about 1” higher at 100, still .75 MOA. I took that to mean it’s shooting hotter than the Federal.

Box to box, seems like a lot of variability.
