We are heading to South Africa this summer and my question is any have any pointers and recommendations for travel? Also is this the right paper work to take a gun over? Chatgpt claims it is but I don’t see where I’d put serial number on. Sorry I’m new to this
When I went, the outfitter emailed me the correct paperwork. You may ask them, unless they change for that service. Sorry I’m not more helpful.
I should clarify I’ve hired Mr. X for when we get there but I just want to make sure I have the right paperwork for when we get back to the states
I’ll check my paperwork and see.
In my experience you have to make sure you do the right South African paperwork. The form you have is great for when you come back…like to say I had this item, I’m bringing it back…you’ll need something similar that says I’m bringing this in. Your outfitter should guide you in that for sure.
This would be the form. Although please double check as I’m no expert. Just done some traveling.
That is the form for items you take abroad to prove you didn’t buy them overseas. Simply fill in the area for the item description including make, model and serial number. You can put more than one item per form. I do this for cameras, scopes, and high end electronics, also rifles. Then take it to your local customs office and get it stamped. Here in Anchorage its easy and we don’t need an appointment. For importing guns into S. Africa, I would hire a company to walk the guns thru with the paperwork. Its not that expensive but if you haven’t done it before its a peace of mind worth $200 or less. You can do it yourself, however. I would do a search on africahunting.com as there is a wealth of information there and lots of guys willing to point you in the right direction. I have travelled to Africa multiple times but anymore I am just renting rifles once I get there to eliiminate the hassle and baggage fees.
