One of my long term objectives is to shoot a mile long shot and before that 1000 yds. I bought a vortex 20-80x spotting scope but its not going to get me to a mile and my wife surprisingly declined to sit down near the target and spot for me. My scope can spot at 300yds but thats a long way from a mile. Anybody have any suggestions on spotting at 1000 and 1650 yds?
Hm. That’s a good question. I haven’t Shot much last 1,000, so I’m not sure what they do for spotting at that distance.
Find an area where the dirt/dust will fly for your target area. Rocks and grass just don’t cut it. The guy (USMC SS) that taught me LRS said he learned more as a spotter than shooter.
Thanks. We dont have dirt and dust in Alabama, lol. Guess i will need to make some.
From a few different Forums I looked over, the consensus seems to be the Leupold Mark 4. If you budget for top of the line model Mark 4, it’ll run $2699 MSRP.
Leupold Mark 4 20-60x80mm Mil-Dot
Next model down is the Mark 4 12-40x60mm Mil-Dot at $1999 MSRP
Again, just the consensus recommendations I have seen across a few different ELR forums for shooting out to 1 mile…
Really depends on your budget but in spotting scopes I like Kowa, Swarovski, and Leica in that order. Kowa is probably hands down the best optically if you’re comfortable with a 88mm or 99mm objective. I have the TSN-883 (angled 88 mm) and it’s surprisingly light for the lens size. It’s comparable in weight to a smaller unit unit as the housing is made from magnesium. If you want something a bit smaller they make a 77mm version that’s comparable in weight to the 65mm scopes.
I have no regrets with the purchase at all. I got a great deal on the 88mm as a close out right before the current model was released. It was about $2500 with the eyepiece and a cordura case included. I’m kinda a glass snob I admit but if chromatic aberration and color fringing doesn’t bother you there are many less expensive models that are decent IMO.
Thanks for the recommendations, i will start researching those.
I had that vortex spotting scope but I sold it and went to a smaller Leupold for packing. But I will say I have seen the rings of Saturn using that spotting scope. Pretty cool. I guess they are a lot bigger in scale than a small hole at 1000 yds.
What did you end up getting?
This is good for up to 1000 yards. A lot of rifle ranges that hold long range shooting use this. a Transducer is place on 4 corners of a target frame. It works on supersonic sound waves and detects the point of impact on the paper target. The system transmits via wifi and you view on your Iphone, Ipad, or laptop. It doesn’t require internet as it creates its own wifi. Cost is about $800.00 Cheaper than a high end spotting scope
