My son has the Savage ultra light in 6.5 PRC and wants to save up a little to upgrade the stock for sure and possibly the trigger. Just curious what you would recommend. He wants to stay around that $600-700 range for a stock. In our search, Stocky stocks seem to be there, but I’ve read some questionable reviews. Any experience with them? How about Mesa stocks? If he can get a carbon fiber I think that’s where he wants to go.
As to the trigger, it seems very limited in options for Savage. I recently upgraded an old 110 I have with a Rifle Basic. I’m pretty pleased with the result so far (and the customer service has been amazing). Just curious if I missed something on that end as well.
I have been a lifelong shooter of Savage rifles and have had or have them in the factory stocks, Boyds laminate, HS Precision, McMillan, and MDT. They all have their purposes, strengths, weaknesses, etc., so at the end of the day it comes down to what the primary use for the weapon will be (in my way of thinking).
My cousin owns a Remington 6.5 Creedmoor in the Magpul Hunter stock which I have used multiple times. The stock worked fine for me and when I got on the weapon for the first time I did not think “oh, this stock feels funny compared to mine”. We were shooting gongs at 800 and 1000 with good success.
I have a pile of savage barrels and actions which I use to build new platforms when I get the need for something new to play with at the range.
Last week, I went looking for stocks to fit the action(s) I have under my bed.
Looked at all of them, watched a ton of reviews, compared prices, listened for tidbits, etc., which mentioned an item not heard in a lot of magazine reviews.
All things considered, I went with a Magpul Hunter for a Savage Model 10 Short Action. Started shopping around the internet, found NEW, in the box with bottom magazine well, trigger guard, and 1 new magazine, the Magpul for 125.00. Most places will show 280.00 to 300.00 and few I found some for just over 200.00, but you have to shop around.
Search for the Magpul Hunter on Amazon, there will be multiple that come up, but look for the 125.00 price, and the stocks are coming from Bosque, maybe Basque Sporting goods out of Austin Texas. That one will be at the greatly reduced price. Not sure about long actions as I was not looking for those.
Stock Review - now that I have one to look at these are my thoughts.
Rigidity through the forearm area - good and was pleased with just how little play I got out of it.
Fit - the action drops right in, just make sure you note if it has a top or bottom bolt release on the newer Savage rifles.
Stock is adjustable for length of pull and the spaces come in the box.
Cheek riser - higher than what I am used to shooting, but again, I have no complaints in shooting with it.
Main takeaway - for 125.00 it is a great stock, just has been overtaken by the MDT chassis and others, but those cost way more, and unless you are going to shoot competition to be competitive, it is debatable if they are a need for a hunting rifle. The MDT Field stock is a good one, but cost more as well.
Good Luck
On the accutrigger, I have yet to shoot a hunting weight trigger, of any make that offered a measurable difference in how well I could put rounds on a target. Yes, they are smoother, yes they can go down below 1.5lbs (why on a hunting rig) but, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the accutrigger…other than chasing what all the guys at deer camp have on theirs.
Another stock in the 400 range I would consider is the HS Precision, have had quite a few of those.
Good luck
Thanks everyone for the replies. There are so many different brands it’s hard to keep track of everything (or even a fraction to be honest). We will investigate those options mentioned.
I think his goal is to make it look better, yet retain the light weight status to eventually use for a Western hunt. So weight and appearance are his primary focus on the stock - while maintaining functionality.
As to the trigger, honestly it might be an appearance thing too. He isn’t a big fan of the two stage trigger look.
Reading back through my reply I realize how pathetic it sounds… It’s all about the looks! But the gun shoots great… He’s just looking to pimp it out a little.
The iota stocks look great but I’m not seeing Savage as an option. I sent them a message to see if they make one that will fit. Thanks for the suggestion.
I think he wants to keep the weight down, but improve the looks and stiffness. Eventually would like to use on a Western hunt.
Before you buy a stock make sure the make a model for that exact savage rifle. The bolt release is different on the ul and not all 110 stocks will work…
If i remember right.
