Jim, congrats on the new recoil pad, I look forward to buying one in weeks to come.
Out of curiosity, are there any lower cost suppressors worth having? Most of the recommendations I see are for suppressors that are $900-$1,000. After tax stamps and other fees, it’s just way too expensive right now. I see plenty of suppressors in the $500-$600 range but I suspect there are reasons nobody seems to recommend them. Any chance you could do a video comparing the more costly suppressors with the lower cost suppressors? Maybe something like the scope comparison video that was super helpful?
I am not Jim but I think it comes down to weight and for that the cost of titanium and the machining of that. The $500 ones are SS. For the nine months wait I prefer to get something to be happy with for a long time.
Regulation other than the tax stamp? Are you saying the atf forces some expensive requirements that result in difficult design and manufacturing issue that raise the price? I guess the one regulation would be “Made in America” which could 4x the price if you could get a chinese made one. Other than that I cannot understand what regulation it would be. I am sure there is a cost adder hidden in to cover the customer service that the surpressor companies provide for handling the paper work and paying the tax stamp for you up front. Use of money is not free but that is not a atf regulation. So I disagree and think the high cost is manufacturing and customer demand - as a capitalistic company they get what they can based on demand fulfillment. But not a govt regulations. I could be wrong of course.
Thanks for the help rosskruse. No, the “other fees” I was referring to is the cost to have legal trust set up so that it makes it easier for my sons to use them one day. I’d have to pay a lawyer buddy for that. No other government regulations that I know of either.
free at silencer central. But when it was not free it was $25 with them. And free to add your sons when the trust is done with them. I am adding 2 more supressors to my trust now for free. I would not pay a lawyer.
I know that many suppressor mfgrs run specials where they pickup the tax stamp. Griffin Armaments almost every month has free tax stamp promos for like 5-6 different suppressors every month. They have suppressors from $400 to $1800 and they are made in Wisconsin.
Thanks Andrew. I saw that offer with them recently, and that is what prompted my asking. It’s tempting indeed. Do you have any experience with their suppressors? Just wondering about the quality and performance.
I’m a little surprised to hear you say there aren’t suppressors under $1k that are recommended. All I own are under $1k suppressors
Not including my .22 cans, I have these on hand:
Dead Air Sandman-S 30 Cal = Awesome (Dead Air has recently had a little PR hit with the way they handled recalls on their new 5.56 can) SilencerCo Harvester Evo 30 Cal = Awesome, smaller, hunting focused YHM T3 Turbo 5.56 = it’s taken mag dump after mag dump and keeps asking for more KGM R556 5.56 = This one only cost me $350 and it eats. Rugged Obsidian 9 9mm = Does double duty on my pistols and 9mm carbine.
You don’t need to buy a SOCOM to have a good can.
EDIT: Wanted to add a link to PEW Science. It’s a good reference for anyone looking for info on suppressors. https://pewscience.com/rankings
Yes, I have their Paladin HD .300 I have used on my .308 and it is very quiet and the recoil is like unsurpressed 5.56. The really nice feature is I take it apart and clean the inside.
