Surface Rust on rifle

What is the best way to get surface rust off a stainless rifle?

Just rub a little gun oil on it with a cloth.

If just oil wont work, lightly polish with some oil and #0000 steel wool.

DO NOT use regular steel wool or steel brush. It will leave carbon steel particles that will rust again. Use like for like or a brass/bronze brush.
