Switching from lead core to solid copper bullets

I watched the podcast with Jim and Ron Spomer discussing accuracy loss when switching between lead core and solid copper bullets. Just want to thank you both; you saved me from re-barreling one of my favorite rifles. I have had a 300RUM Ultimate One custom built by Mark Basner for many years. It’s always been a true 3/4 MOA shooter, not that common in my experience for a 300 mag. I have always shot Barnes bullets in it, originally 180 TTSX, more recently 175 LRX and have shot most African plains game, an elk and assorted deer with it.

For a variety of reasons I decided to try a highly recommended lead core bonded bullet but was unable to get it to shoot accurately enough to satisfy me. But when I switched back to the Barnes bullets the accuracy was less than stellar. Drove me nuts! Did all the usual accuracy verification stuff, including cleaning the bore, with no success; even went back to the 180TTSX’s, no joy. After watching the podcast I cleaned the bore VERY thoroughly to make sure there was no fouling, followed by a good session of old JB’s lapping compound. Went to the range this morning and PRESTO, good as new.

Thanks again
