Testing Rounds for Elk Hunt with 300 Win Mag

Just bought a Christensen Arms MPR in 300 Win Mag for an up coming elk hunt. Looking to test 4 or 5 factory made rounds to determine which one works best with the gun. Any suggestions?

I don’t have any specific recommendations on which to choose, but if you go into the downloads section on the Backfire website, you have access to the ammo comparison tool that will help you to know when you have a statistically significant sample of ammo to say which load is better than another.

Will you be changing that to go with the new four shot group size you mentioned on the recent man cast?

All I can say is I have been shooting Barnes Vor-tx for years and extremely happy. I am shooting 165gr and occasionally think of moving to 180’s but then I say why? Why change it if it works? My experience is on antelope(1), deer and elk. Elk is cows and bulls. It has seen so long ago I forget my group size - I guess I need to keep better records.:face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Based on the ammo I could find locally, here are the rounds I’m going to test:

Hornady Precision Hunter 200 Gr ELD-X
Federal Premium Terminal Ascent 200 Gr
Sig Sauer Elite Series Copper 165 Gr
Sig Sauer Venari SP 180 Gr
Nosler Trophy Grade 190 Gr ABLR (this one was $120/box, but what the heck, it’s in the name of science!)

I’ll keep everyone updated on how it goes, I’ve got the ammo comparison tool so this should be lots of fun! I’ll also keep an eye out for the Barnes Vor-tx and give that a try if these other rounds don’t work out.
