The 30.06 is still awesome

30.06 cartridge has taken more trophy game than any other cartridge.

I am headed to South Africa next year on a Safari in the Kalahari and when I asked what rifle should I bring I was told to bring a .308 win or better yet a Springfield 30.06 for the plains animals. I was thinking I was going to have to get a .375 H&H or larger but I am not hunting dangerous game so won’t need a heavy rifle. I will be taking animals no larger than a moose (i.e. Wildebeest) so 30.06 it is for my hunt.

Check out this video on the success of the 30.06!

I know it’s an old cartridge, but man… it’s pretty affective 30 cal. I’ve taken Alaskan moose & mountain goat with mine. I actually really like that caliber. Honestly though, wish the 280 Ackly was more common.

Great choice for Africa. Are you hunting blue or black wildebeest? I didn’t find the black hard to kill but those blue wildebeest are extraordinarily tough.

Yes the availability of Ammunition was one reason the guide told me .308 or 30.06. Which makes sense. When I was in Alaska in 1982 I sold my 7mm Mag and bought a 30.06 because of ammo availability. Ammo for the 30.06 was easy to find (still is) and 7MM Mag was nearly non-existent.

He also told me that if we were to hunt dangerous game I could rent a .416 Rigby or .375 H&H (I am very familiar with .375 H&H).

Right now I am set to hunt Blesbuck, Impala, Common Springbuck, and Blue Wildebeest .

With the option to hunt many more different animals.

It should be a great experience.
