Tikka T3X Possible Upgrades

Hello everyone. Jim, I watched your video on the Tikka T3X on YouTube this evening. My thought for this post is if you had the ability to put upgrades on your Tikka, what would it be and why? Would you put it on a new chassis, new trigger, thread the barrel/new barrel, new bottom metal?
Just curious how you would proceed and what would it look like with different price points?

I’d probably step up to the T3x Roughtech which I feel addresses most of the issues while also costing less than trying to pick out some aftermarket parts.

I was thinking about the Super Varmit for the same reason, but I would still have to put it on a chassis. Getting one used would be ideal, but I never see them up on Rokslide.

First thing I’d do is put it in an MDT field stock. Great stock. Will fix the recoil issues and give a much more shootable platform.

Threading the muzzle is a big one but it’s such a thin barrel I’d be tempted to put a Bartlein, proof, BSF or something like that on there and just rebarrel it.

Then a trigger.

Is this too much? Maybe… but some may say it’s not enough. Does my wife understand? No, no she doesn’t. But it sure was fun to make and almost as fun to shoot.

Nice, but how much did this set you back?
I can see creating something yourself has a certain self-satisfaction, but for the amount you spent on this, was there any alternatives off the shelf? Just curious to know.

So my son-in-law bought my daughter a Tikka. I am finding that this 270 Win Tikka T3X Lite w/ synthetic stock out of the box was disappointing. So nobody thinks I cheapened out here are the different cartridges we shot the first time out. First used PPU to break in the barrel even though not needed and get on paper. Cleaned barrel again then went to Federal Premium TSX 130 gr wouldn’t group. Next was Norma Whitetail, no love. Went to Hornady Precision Hunter 130gr which I could group 2 then fliers, so went to Hornady Super Performance 130 gr which would group 3 then fliers. At that time we had shot approx 25 rounds over 2 hours allowing for the barrel to cool off in between testing. So left the range and I brought the rifle home. First thing I found was that the barrel wasn’t floated, the barrel was hitting the synthetic stock in several places. So I am blaming the stock. I have relieved the stock and have pillared then stock as felt the stock needed. Ready to go back out and try the Hornady Super Performance and Hornady Precision Hunter. In the meantime while waiting on my daughter I have loaded so Barnes TTSX 110gr. Hope to get back out this week and see the results with the Hornady Super Performance and Precision Hunter. If not better question become, loading or change stock.

This Tikka replacement trigger spring is the best 10 bucks you can spend on your Tikka IMO. Super easy to install and makes the trigger feel like butter. Highly recommended.

I’m going to look at that trigger spring replacement. I replaced the springs on my Howa 1500 and I understand your comment. I wasn’t aware that there was a way to tweak the Tikka trigger.

About what pound pull does this reduce the trigger pull to? Thx

It’ll go 12 to 24 ounces. I don’t know what mine is set at but I absolutely love it. Helps a ton with accuracy. Let me know what you think!

I didn’t buy a bolt. I just share bolts with another tikka I have. I could have purchased a fierce rival in 7 saum for 2300. Otherwise, I would have had to go to a custom rifle maker which would probably be over 3500. If I didnt do all the upgrades, I could have got a tikka t3x off locked and loaded for 655 and then just rebarreled it. that would be 655 + 560 = 1215. Could’ve done a rem 700 build too for probably about the same, but I like tikka actions. I dont know. It was a fun project. And it is really fun to shoot. Down in Yuma where I go there is a fun silhouette range you can stretch out to 710 yards and a thousand yard range if you have your own targets. Hopefully I will get an AZ elk tag next year. Im 0/2 so far, lol.

Jim, is there a reason why you would choose the MDT field stock over the Oryx chassis? I’m thinking of switching out my chassis before hunting season.

The oryx is very functional, but to me it just feels cheap. The field stock feels more solid and like something I’m happy to put on my gun. It still gives the more modern long range lines, and functionality at a great price.

Any idea on if Tikka and Sako are using the same Trigger setup? Curious if this spring swap would benefit the Sako line too?

I also have a the vg carbon stock from stockys an want the backstop recoil pad what pattern fits it?

I wish I knew. At 10 bucks, it would be a fairly cheap mistake if you purchased it and it doesn’t work . You could also give them a call and see what they say. Good luck.

I don’t think we have that one. Is it glued on?

Have you tried gunbroker.com?

I believe these were my selections. It fits fine. Two screws from the thin limbsaver pad that comes with the stock worked with the backfire pad
