Turret Tags set at 600’, hunting at 9000+

Looking for some thoughts on this. As the title says, I live at ~600’ elevation but my elk hunt will be between 8000 and 11000’. Should I reset my tags to a higher elevation? What elevation should I use? Is it even worth it for hunting under 400 yards (the diff is .1 mil - at 1000 it’s .7)?

Perhaps use something like Shooters Calculator or other similar app to see what the ballistics show. Input the elevation, expected temp and humidity of your hunt location so that your ballistics are as accurate as you can get,

From there, you can determine whether to adjust the Turret Tags or not.

Right, that’s how I got my numbers. At 400 in the numbers change by only .1 mil but at 500+ its starts tonnage a difference. I don’t plan to take a shot past 400, but you never know. That’s what I was asking… is it worth it in your opinion?

IMO, ethical kill beyond 400 starts getting sketchy…though your mileage may vary (lol).

For me, even if I had the gun to shoot further and knew I could be accurate to longer distances, I would not want to hit the animal and having it run (in my case, probably AWAY from me) making the chase that much harder!

I guess two ways to approach it.

Personally, I see so many misses on animals from guys that I like to eliminate ALL variables within my control. Then, when Murphy comes to throw one variable off, it’s still a hit. So for me, I’d set the tags at 10k feet.

Other people might say if you’re hunting within 400, you could just mentally remember to give it one less click than the tag since you’re up at elevation.

Past 400 yards, a shot becomes so much more intricate. I’m gonna want to control for temperature, exact altitude, etc.

So why do I make turret tags out to 1000? Follow up shots if an animal is running away, range shooting, and because some hunters are going to do it anyway, and I’d like their dope to at least be better than “Hey Charlie, just aim a foot above his back and send it!”

I’m in the same situation. I live at ~500’ and hunting NM at 10-11,000’ in a few weeks. Running my numbers in MOA it’s:
300 -.25
400 -.5
500 -.75
600 -1.25
It opens up to -4.75 by 1000, but I don’t have any intention of going past 600. Personally, I am just going to hold back the clicks in the field. It’s not a big enough change for me to change out the turret tags. If I was going out past 600 I probably would though.

@jwright4218 Something seems off. Even a 7 prc would be around 5 MOA at 400 yards.

I bought the Applied Ballistics app just for the elevation option since Geoballistics doesn’t have it. AB has these differences for my 7PRC with Federal Premium 175 eldx:

9000 elevation
300y - 0.8 mils
400y - 1.4mils
500y - 2 mils
600y - 2.7 mils
1000y - 5.9

600 elevation

300y - 0.8 mils
400y - 1.5mils
500y - 2.2 mils
600y - 2.9 mils
1000y - 6.7 mils

I am not smart enough to do a MOA to mils convertion, but what I see if nearly a negligble difference in mils sub 600yards.

I should have clarified. I was posting my variance or negative MOA from what I would dial at 10,000’ vs 500’.
400yrds at 500’ 6 MOA
400yrds at 10000’ 5.5 MOA
Hence the -.5 I was calling out.
