Does anyone have any experience with Unit 15 in Colorado. Specifically the North end of the Sarvis Creek Wilderness?
I’ve been combing through the western states looking for a place I can get a mule deer tag and have decent odds of a black bear as well. So far, 15 is the best I’ve found.
Thoughts?
I don’t have personal experience in Unit 15. I checked with friends etc. that usually hunt that area…but no response given.
I did find this when I did a search of CO GMU15; not sure how helpful it is…
Justin, are you thinking hunting of archery hunting? If so, it looks like you could just by an Over-The-Counter bear tag if you draw archery deer tag. And if you don’t draw the deer tag, you could do secondary draw for the archery bear tag. There were leftover tags after the primary draw in 2024.
If you want rifle deer, that would be Oct/Nov but bear season is Sept. Rifle bear tags drew out at zero pref points so even with no points you have a shot at that tag (I didn’t look up deer draw statistics). Harvest data for 2023 (2024 is not available yet) shows either 29 or 30 bears killed in that unit in September. So somewhere in that unit bears are dying (looks like more are killed with arrows than bullets). My main hunting in Colorado is chasing speed goats east of I-25 (I live near Greeley/Ft Collins so it’s a half-day hunt and back home quickly). This year my 13-year old and I both hope to draw bear tags in a unit that requires 1 preference point to go along with our usual antelope tags. Good luck with the draw and your hunt.
