Using a QD with my suppressor

I have found that I cannot get my 270 WSM to group well when I use a QD for my suppressor. It does fine when I direct thread it on my gun. A QD groups fine on my non-magnum rifles. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Interesting. I don’t use qd mounts for suppressors (just direct thread) so I haven’t had that experience. Is there any tiny amount of wiggle when the qd mount is used?

Any looseness in a muzzle device will absolutely cause accuracy problems.

Jim,
Thanks for your quick response. I used Loc-Tite blue on my QD threads, so there is no wiggle in the QD. I had someone tell me that Q.D.'s will not work as well with magnum calilbers. Not sure what the reason would be. I just wanted to check with you since you use suppressors on a regular basis. I just purchased a Fierce Rival in a 7mm PRC and will just direct thread my suppressor to ensure no accuracy issues. Thanks again!

I haven’t noticed any change in accuracy with a QD suppressor Mount / brake. That being said to be fair and honest, I’ve never done large volume, statistically significant sample size, testing with this.

In theory, it seems like it could. I mean the whole idea behind the tuner muzzle brake is that I just making small changes in weight at the end of the barrel, you can tune a rifle in or out of accuracy. I’ve often wondered if they could invent a tunable suppressor.

Agreed that I don’t understand how being a magnum would make a difference one way or the other.

Not sure that I would trust blue Loctite however for that use. Typical heat gun, hair dryer temperatures will break blue loctite. And keep in mind that even if you don’t get the temperature exactly where it needs to be, repeated exposures to high temperature over time will break that stuff down. I don’t recommend red either. It’s too far in the other direction. The amount of heat needed to take that off can easily damage your Barrel especially if it’s a carbon fiber version. I tend to use rock set with good results especially if using it with a torque wrench. If you need to get that stuff off all you need to do is soak it in water overnight.

Carter,
Thanks for the information. My Browning X-Bolt 270 WSM is the only rifle that I have had this issue. I have shot a 6.5 CM and a .308 in the Browning X-Bolt with no change in groupings when I used the QD instead of direct thread. For some reason, it has only been the 270 WSM that my accuracy deteriorated when using a Q.D. It would shoot 3/4" groups with direct thread and would moved out the 1-1/2" to 2" when using the Q.D. Either way, I will probably go direct thread on my new Fierce Rival 7mm PRC.I may try using the rock set as you mentioned on my new set up. Thanks again for your input.

Interesting. Was it the same suppressor, with both a QD and a DT connection? Have you tried shooting it with just the QD brake on it, no suppressor and seen what the accuracy did?

Also should point out that there are plenty of people, at least online, who claim that with proper torque setting that you don’t need any form of locking material. I tend to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. However that did get me in trouble with one company recommending the red loctite.

Yes, I shot with just Q.D. brake and then with the suppressor screwed on the Q.D. brake. My groupings spread out with the suppressor screwed on the Q.D brake. It shot great with just the Q.D brake (no suppressor). Of course it shot fine with the suppressor screwed on directly to the barrel threads. Either way, I am going direct thread from here on out.
