I got to give it to the vortex people. Their podcasts are rarely just outright plugs of Vortex products. They often do things like this
I thought this was great too. I wonder why they don’t go back to change the SAAMI specs for cartridges like the WSMs and SAUMs? Would be awesome to see them produce factory ammo and rifles with longer throats for these cartridges. Instead there’s essentially no support except for 300 wsm and adg brass for 7 SAUM.
It was interesting but I did not see the great advantage in what they showed. As a hunting round, the distance that this extends to is not one we should be shooting animals. And I doubt you would use in any competition setting. So interesting as it may be not really practical.
If changing saami specs add 7rm and 300wm to the list.
That was my first thought too, but something else occurred to me. I am a recent devotee of the the 300 WSM, having picked up my first rifle so chambered earlier this year. I am working up a load with the 180 Barnes TTSX. In the video, however, they were able to seat that 212gr LRX bullet long, not compromising case capacity, and still use a factory chamber with a fast twist barrel. Their express intent was long range hunting. I totally agree with your take there. I’m not going to rush out to build a 300 Super WSM, but that said, the 212 gr .308 cal bullet at 2800+ fps might be appealing to some for bigger game at the 300-400 yard range.
Agreed. I’ve heard about this kind of a thing for a while and everyone always talks about how you’re going to have to ream out the throat of the chamber in order to seat something as long as this. The fact that they’re able to use that bullet without having to do any reaming is quite impressive.
This is the first I’ve really heard of that bullet and it’s style. Seems like they would talk about it a bit more. They kind of copied it when they did the 0.284, 160 grain lrx but not exactly the same.
You’ve now got bullets made by them that work wonderfully well at short range and out to most ethical hunting distances.
Keep us posted on that 180 ttsx work up. I’m in the process of breaking in a 300 WSM now with Factory ammo and I’m strongly considering developing either a 150 ttsx, or maybe going crazy and going down to 130.
Absolutely, will keep you posted. I just finished breaking mine in with factory ammo. Got good results with the Hornady 180 gr CX. Since I’m in CA, I’m shooting almost all copper/non-lead for my hunting guns. Crazy thing, I have toyed around with the idea of a 130 gr load myself.
