Water filtration/purification system

Let’s say you were going on a trip to Mexico or Central America, you know, a place where you are not supposed to drink the tap water. Well, what if you wanted to take some sort of water filtration/purification abilities so that you could make the tap water safe to drink. Any of my fellow Backfire members have any experience with this? I’m looking for something that 1) fits in checked luggage 2) is simple yet effective 3) the cheaper the better.

Have a look at lifestraw. I always have one with me wherever I go

I take a water purifying water bottle with me when traveling to more exotic places. Just fill the bottle with tap water and it purifies it for me before I drink it. Like this Amazon.com

I went to Mexico, Central & South America. I used

  • (a) Water Purification tablets (Amazon.com), then
  • (b) A UV cleaner bottle (e.g., Amazon.com).
Tasted just fine & didn’t get sick or anything.

On a (much) prior trip (to RU), I used a t-shirt before just using (a) to get the rust, a little mud, n stuff out first.

Thanks guys. I ordered items from each of your replies. It will be nice to not have to buy disposable plastic bottles of water anywhere I travel from now on.

I had no idea that the technology had progressed to this stage. I have a Guardian water purifier that was developed for the spec op community and is amazing but it is not as user friendly as this bottle unit. Went to Amazon and got three for me and my sons.

LifeStraw is a good option. I’ve used the Sawyer Squeeze backpacking. You can use it with a larger pouch or fit directly to standard water bottles. Sawyer also has a product that will fit directly to a faucet or hose bib.

The Grayb; Jim pointed out is great, we have two in our basement that we use for hiking. It is a self contained system. I also have taken the Sawyer squeeze to AK and CO on hunts, and although convenient it has lots of pieces to keep up with and requires maintenance after usage. For the type of trip you are describing I would go with a Graybl or lifestraw.

Who in the heck goes to Mexico to drink water?
