Looking for a new gun for pronghorn. I have two calibers that would work. Those are a .308 and a .243. What are some good options? I may use the .243, but considering a 6.5 creedmoor or 6.5 PRC (would be a good whitetail gun too). Need to research it, but even thought about the 22 creedmoor. What are your thoughts?
All will work. 6.5 prc would be awesome for those really long range shots. One of the hot 22’s would be fun to own and are next on my list.
22 Creedmoor would be perfect! I’d also look at 6 Creedmoor. Or, for something different, maybe a 6 arc gas gun?
I will put on my grumpy old man hat today and take a different direction.
Old school: 25-06.
A classic
Good deal. When ever the holidays slow down I’m going to look hard at the 22 creedmoor. I think the 6 creedmoor is to close to my old Remington model 700 .243, which shoots fantastic.
Its on my list for sure, but my dad has one. Crappy scope on it, but he has one none the less. Took a nice 145" whitetail with it years ago. Very capable round.
Good choice if you’re going old school. I’ll put my grumpy old man hat on as well and throw the 270 Win into the mix.
Taking the hat back off, and seeing Jim’s post, I am also intrigued by a 6 arc AR platform.
Your .243 is a great one, but if you NEED a new gun (and who doesn’t?) there are some fine suggestions above. You could get a 22-caliber gun, but hang onto that .243 because if you ever hunt pronghorn in Kolorado you’ll need 24 caliber minimum.
Although .243 will work just fine…Since we are heading into 2025, may I suggest a quarter bore like 25-06?

6.5 creedmor devastated my goat in Wyoming in '22, same for my bother’s.
Got my fingers crossed for Sako to release a 22 Creedmoor! Probably not, but I can hope.
